    Default New West Texas Motocross Track

    Steel Roost Motocross in Levelland, TX has just announced that they will be having their first race on March 30th. All popular classes as well as ATV and scrambles will be available.

    For those who haven't heard about this track, the Veretto family are racers and have been working on it for a couple of years. They have been holding organized practices for several months on the weekends and using the feedback from the riders for fine-tuning the track. Everything fell into place with the purchase of the starting gates from the old 211 track last month.

    If anyone is interested, I have both contact info and/or directions. Sign ups are at 7:30am, practice begins at 9:00am, and first gate drops at 10:00am.

    I see they are having a race this weekend. Can you give us the low down on the track? Is it like Jake's or TNT? Monstrous natural hills? Haha.

    We just got in from Steel Roost.

    We had several riders there today, from Cade on his Supermini all the way up to pro riders on their 450s. Everybody seemed to be able to find their own ways around the track.

    The track is situated around a playa lake. There is just a little bit of terrain as far as elevation changes as it winds toward and away from the lake. The track is just a bit over eight-tenths of a mile, but you won't believe that when you see it. It is really spread out with a lot of open spaces around the track lines. Lap times for the advanced riders were coming in under the 2 minute mark.

    In several places, the option is there for advanced riders to triple and for others to double. There is a table top into a gravity cavity then a double/triple out of the cavity. There is an uphill whoop section into a "V" turn into a downhill whoop section. There is a rumor flying around right now that the dash to the finish line may have a 3 path option! Either over the Combine Jump (yes, he really buried a combine under there), left of the jump through some sand whoops, or right of the jump through a chicane turn. I don't know what the owner will do for the race on Sunday, but the options sound very cool! We were trying all three out this afternoon. There seems to be a few sections that may be a bit narrow, but we are addressing those as much as we are able to do before Sunday.

    The owner has moved so much dirt lately that the place isn't as picturesque as PCMX, but once you are on the track, I really think you will be impressed. We are all finding out just how much work goes into putting on a race. I know now that Michael will tell you how much of a team effort it is!

    We want everybody to have a good time this Sunday. I just hope that everybody will be patient with us and try to understand that this IS our first rodeo (at putting on a motocross race). Constructive criticism will be appreciated and listened to. If everybody who has been calling and Emailing will come out, we will have a really good West Texas MX race!

    we just got back from the race today and zandy and kaleb had fun i cannot tell you details like taxslayer can ,but the boys seem to have a good time and the couple that has the track seem real friendly and trying to get into the groove of things ( i remember my first race ugh ) but kids seem to like it and once everything got off to start it went well. they trophy 1 thru 3 and had 78riders and 125 entries thats good for a first race and not much advertiseing so hope all get a chance to go on the next race . they have good room for camping or parking i thought and not to far from town to go in and eat or stay easy to get to the track also

    putting on a race is definitely tough business, but putting a track together from scratch is a whole 'nother story. i didn't put our track together, but i know what kind of work it takes, so kudos to them for even getting a track up and a race run.

    sounds like a cool place and sounds like the owners are good people. i wish them luck and hopefully i can get out there soon to try it out.

    and that grass will grow back - our track used to be barren too. once it's there though, you better not even dig your heel in it or cottonginner will be escorting you to the grass seeder.

    I'll try to give a better rundown of raceday in a future post. Right now, I am holding off due to an unfortunate situation that I will address when I have all the correct facts.

    I did want to say a few things about the opening race at Steel Roost MX.

    First of all, there is no way that we could have pulled it off without the help of so many good friends. I told anyone who would listen in the weeks leading up to the race that no matter how much we thought of, we would be shocked at how many things we wouldn't think of to plan for. How true that turned out to be. However, things were not a total disaster because knowledgeable and experienced people stepped up to help the new owners get through the first race.

    First of all, thanks go out to Sharon Humphery of Andrew Arenacross. Sharon stepped in (a day early, no less) and helped to make sure that those working in the signup trailer were prepared for the onslaught. Her experience in dealing with signups and the time crunch to arrange classes kept us from drowning.

    The next big thanks went out to Kenny Williams of Littlefield, TX. Kenny is a national director for NMA and his wealth of knowledge proved invaluable all day long. Kenny runs the World Minis in Vegas for NMA and mans the starting gates at most every NMA race. He definately knows how to run a race!

    I am not going to thank everybody here. It would take too long, but I wanted to get the big ones in.

    I thought there was a tremendous turnout for a first race. The owner hoped for 100 and got 125 entries. I think we would have been overwhelmed with many more than we had, to be honest. We did have to run a second practice to give us time to get all the classes done, but no one griped much about that.

    I thought we had a great mix of riders in all the classes. We combined 3 classes in only one moto and the rest were single class motos with 2 or 3 double class motos thrown in.

    I do think that everyone was shocked by the number of quad riders that showed up. We were not prepared for that and were not able to break down the classes as would have been preferred. One additional no-trophy class was tagged on at the end in order to give the quad riders an additional race. Next time, we will be prepared to bust the quads down into skills classes.

    Also, we found out there were some riders who showed up to only race a TT track and left upset and disappointed. The owner decided that he couldn't get both tracks groomed and watered adequately for the first race and he chose not to offer the classes. It was a mistake since he did mention scrambles on his flyer. Again, he will learn, improve, and keep going.

    There was some mention that the track was too long for 5 lap motos. I don't think that is a true statement. Ross Prichard on his 85 was running laptimes around 1:40. But, the owner knocked a lap off all the motos after intermission.

    All in all, I applaud the gang at Steel Roost for getting through the trial by fire.

    Well, props to Steel Roost. Noone has a great event their first go-around and I'm sure it'll only get better from here. From what I've heard, the first 2-4 years are the hardest ones to make it through. However, with such a close-knit group of people helping out, it shouldn't be too hard. I think it's awesome that people from other tracks will come help out their "competition" for the love of the sport.

    I just found out Braden moved up to A a few weeks ago. How did he fare against the other guys? Also, Turner is from up around this area - I remember racing him in the B classes.
