Yeah, it's tough to understand for me... I was earning money on my own by the time I was 12 doing work for a builder in our neighborhood and didn't stop from there. It baffles me when I see this lack of motivation and sense of entitlement that some kids have today, including my step-daughter... then I see kids like Max and others that are good respectful kids with the motivation to make their own way and it makes me glad there are still motivated teens out there...

NATHAN - Please don't think I meant that in a bad way! I fully support the marines 100%. I have a few friends that are in it now as we speak, actually. What I meant by that was that he is saying he wants to take motocross as far as he can for a career, and it's his number one focus and concern at this point however, he just needs a little extra money at the moment. If that's the case, then he should put the majority of his time into MX to achieve that goal and just get a regular job for now for extra money. But, nothing against the marines at all!!! lol sorry!

MICKEY - Yeah, I understand where you're coming from about being young and working. I wasn't quite 12 when I started, but 15. And it definitely is a nice thing to see people my age with goals and ambition. Not only because it's a good thing for a person to be driven, but it helps them out in the long run! You're never too young to start saving up that money! haha.

Anyone who is planning on making Moto as a career is dumb, you have to have a plan that goes beyind motorcycles... take Ryan for example, at 16 hes a pretty decent rider and has the possibility of making some money racing, BUT he knows the chances are slim that it will happen and is planning on going to college........

That sounds real close to some advice Magic Johnson had to give at a lecture at UTA last month. It was about basketball of course. Something to the effect of there are 5000 college seniors playing basketball. When the NBA draft comes along, there are 31 teams that get 2 players each. So 62 of those 5000 will actually get drafted as NBA players. In general, about half of those actually truly succeed as NBA pros.

However Magic also said don't give up the dream. If that's what you want, go for it. But be sure you have a fallback plan. In his case, he still needed that to remain successful after retiring. He's making far more money as a business owner now than he was as a player because of his education and work ethic.

I must add that Ryan's not even a college senior yet and looking to have better than those 62 in 5000 odds!

Oh i'd have to beg to differ w/ him on that comment! Now I won't argue that his education & work ethic don't play a role in it, but the 'real' success...branding!

branding doesn't come easy.... as a matter of fact there might even be an entire industry built around that concept. some people might assign a nasty word like politics to it as well.... it's all marketing on some level.
