I remember him. He was still racing when I started in 1980.
Crocky, you're confusing two different guys. Ruben Alonzo was from S. Oak Cliff. he had some hearing problems but was a good lip reader and could speak. rode Suzukis a lot over the years and was still racing when I quit in late 80'. the other guy is Mike Hullett. he's the one with the built up boot. he was from Lancaster and had no hearing or speech issues. both guys were experts by late 73', early 74'. someone told me Hullett was into dragbikes after MX, and was often seen at the Ennis strip.
there was another hearing impaired fellow named David Ferguson who raced until late 74', early 75'. from Duncanville, I think (maybe S. Oak Cliff also). he was profoundly deaf and communicated by sign language.
maybe your correct been so long ago, no harm intended, could have sworn he rode a honda, well he was never the less they all were fasts lets go back in time again, anybody remember stemmons mx park i went to R.L. Turner in carrollton my wood shop teacher raced cross country his name was Mr. Hook , we all had mx bikes and loved racing we put a high school mx team together rented some land out on 35 next to the trinity and built stemmons mx, some of my classmates were guy like kirk spenser, wes stiles, david flores and a few others i can't recall, o those were the days.Originally Posted by leathervisorguy
Craig you are correct Mike rode for Irving Suzuki both MX and drag racing very nice guy Gene Jr.
Ruben did ride a CR125 in the early days. I also remember him riding a CZ400 in '75. His dad fell in the bathtub and broke his back at a hotel when we were racing at redbud for the amatuer national regional qualifier in '77.
I saw Mike Hullett at freestone a few months ago with Joe Davis.

Those were great times. I remember all those guys from back then. The High School MX Teams from 75 and 76 were a blast. If I remember right, there were 7 or 8 high school teams in the area back then. It's sad, but I can't imagine that being allowed to happen today.
When we found out that R.L. Turner had a motocross team, Mike Connell and I got together and convinced the principal at Lewisville High to let us start a motocross team as well. They gave us a trophy case next to the gym to put our trophys in and even announced our results on Monday mornings. The metal shop teacher was our sponsor and he let us use the shop after school. We did a lot of modifications and welding to our bikes back in those days. We had a few fast guys on the team as well. Dennis and Mike Hawthorn, Harry Heinze, Mike Connell, Joey Galloway, to name a few.
I remember Mr. Hooks too, and still have a tool set he gave me for winning the 125 intermediate class at Stemmons during one of the high school races.

Ruben Alonzo was from Pleasant Grove. He was a friend of mine and we attended John B Hood Junior High School together from 1971-73. He was hearing impaired, however he could communicate with you very well especially considering his hearing impairment. He was fast too.
Man you guys are old! Oh wait, so am I. No one remembers me from the 70's, I remember, I wasn't fast! At least I looked fast, my JT jersey had Knowles Yamaha on it![]()

I pretty much grew up in Knowles Yamaha. I was friends with there grandson and Mr and Mrs Knowles were like grand parents to me.
They were good people.

Mike Hullett is out of dragbikes now. He has a son named James Hullett. I think James won the 250B Pro Circuit(?) series a few years back.
