Jim Pomeroy is the 1st American to beat the Europeans in Motocross, Spain 1973, on a Bultaco cycle. Jim silenced the myth that the European champions could not be beat by Americans. Like the 1st four minute mile and other first, the gate was now open. All American MX rides were PUMPED! when Jim won. The win kept me true to my Bultaco. I figured if Jim could go that fast on a Bultaco, then I had no excuses. Bultaco sales soared. I remember sitting on the starting line and counting that the Bultacos out numbered everything else. Jim was my inspiration, my hero.
Who would of thought that 30 years later I would actually meet Jim in person at the AHRMA National in Jefferson Texas. And who would of thought that I would have the privledge to become a friend of Jim Pomeroy and his family. You see, Jim is a life time member of the Texas Vintage Racing Club. The oldest Vintage MX club in America, since 1988. And I became friends with Jim thru the TVRC. Jim loved to come race with us in Texas. Jim was loud, fun, and the life of the party. A true motocross adrenaline junkie! I remember watching Jim shovel dirt in Texas Motor Speedway in the summer of 2004. The TVRC was building a motocross track between turns 1 and 2 in the infield. It was 102 degrees. I was spent, exhausted from working on the track. And there was Jim, way out of his Washington State enviroment of cool temperatures working his butt off for us and the sport. That was Texas Motocross History. Probably the only time MX will ever be inside the Texas Motor Speedway. Jim of course got the hole shot and won easily. Jim stayed with me several times during his trips to Texas for TVRC and AHRMA races. The TVRC took him to Uncle Julios restaurant for his birthday one time. I got to spend my 48th birthday with Jim on Kona Island, Hawaii, January 2005. He had been invited to visit the upstart MX scene on the island and was gracious enough to invite me. I was there when Jim crossed his last finish line in first place at Mid Ohio Vintage Days, 2006. I got the photo of Jims last flag, thumbs up. Always thumbs up. The Bultaco sign.
Jim passed away that summer in a tragic accident while four wheeling in his Jeep. The Vintage MX world turned upside down. We dont know what we have untill we lose it. We lost a great ambassador of the sport when Jim passed. I miss him greatly. Thanks Jim for the memories.
The Texas Vintage Racing Club will host the 2nd annual Jim Pomeroy memorial race this Sunday, March 16th at North Forty MX, Sherman Tx. Yours truly and the TVRC will host a cook out and party around the camp fire Saturday night in memory of Jim. Story telling and photos of Jim are encouraged.
It's Bike Week at North 40. Arena Cross Friday night, Super TT and Flat Track Saturday, and MX on Sunday. Swap meet, bands, north 40 girls, lots of fun.
Hope to see you there. MIKE, TVRC "Going Forward Into The Past"
