Shand Garcia here with SHOCK SOX, BERM-book and Holeshot Magazine. I have been the co-promoter of this event (along with Buffalo Creek's owner Russell Hobbs) since the race's inception in 2008. I handle the promotions, marketing, sponsorship relations (money, awards, banners), and the race day announcing. Mr. Hobbs' part is facility, track operations, general race weekend duties. This has been an OK co-promoter system to have in the past. I would like to address some issues below to keep the speculation to a minimum.
Let me start by apologizing to EVERYONE who came to this past weekend's race. There is no way to sugarcoat it. The weekend was a disappointment, and not the way I envisioned.
Money Issue = For those of you that know me, trust me....it was NOT a Pro-purse money issue. Russell Hobbs/Buffalo Creek has put on and paid out Pro-Am purse money for many years. All four years we have had great Sponsors that helped out with sponsor money. PLUS, Mr. Hobbs has contributed a lot out of his own pocket. This past weekends race was no different...
2006 $5,000
2007 $5,000
2008 $5,000
2008 $10,000
2009 $10,000
2010 $10,000
2011 - THE PRO PURSE MONEY WAS THERE!
Water Truck = The water truck did breakdown. There was plenty of water in a third tank on location. Plenty of people (moto-dads and enthusiasts) all tried to fix the situation, but it was not possible. NO EXCUSE, there should have been a backup water truck on location for a race of this magnitude.
Track Conditions = The track condition was unacceptable the very second the Pros took off for their practice. No way around that fact!
Cancellation = As the non-track owner, co-promoter, my hands were tied when it came down to the final decision. This is ultimately a decision that waved heavy on Mr. Hobbs' mind. He had the right to make the decision in which he felt "safety of the riders is of highest importance, this seems to be the best thing to do." (quote on txmotocross.com). I am not here to throw Mr. Hobbs under the bus. He made a business decision on HIS PROPERTY.
Future = Many have asked me about the SHOCK SOX race being held in the future. First of all, Mr. Hobbs owns the rights and the title to Easy Money Pro-Am. SHOCK SOX was the title sponsor. Having explained that - my energy, efforts, and company will look into hosting a future spin-off Pro-Am. I have been blessed through the years to have some really sound and solid people from the Texas motocross community, as well as sponsors, in my life. Many of you are like true family to me! Special thanks to everyone that came up to apologize to me yesterday. Yeah, get that, when I was apologizing to many of you yesterday morning, many of you were apologizing to me for the debacle I was tied up in. That is one of the things that makes this sport and camaraderie so great! So many phone calls, emails, private messages and texts showing concern..THANK YOU ALL!
I would like to thank Mr. Hobbs for giving me an opportunity to co-promote this race each year. I would also like to thank all of the sponsors that gave me (and this event) their undivided attention each year. I would like to thank Amy Jaynes and the other staff members that helped piece this event along. And, most importantly a SPECIAL thanks to all of you racers (paying customers) that helped this event grow each and every year.
Again, my sincerest apologies to all of you racers that drove in expecting a first-class race event. I assure you, I am every bit as disappointed as all of you. Four years in the making down the drain in one weekend is not a good feeling. This is not the way I (or anyone) wanted it to go.
I will be at River Valley next weekend announcing their 3rd Annual Race to Benefit Cancer Research - Lynn Nickerson Memorial race with $10,000 Pro Purse. Hope to see many of you there!
Thank you for reading,
Shand Garcia
