    Default Thinking of..

..buying a 2-stroke CR250 again. Like most people I grew up on 2-strokes and raced them until probably '02. Since then I've been on 4-strokes. Part of this is the nostalgia and the other is wanting to cut back on the weight of the bike. But it's been 8 damn years since I've even sat on a 2-stroke, I was wondering just how much of this is a pipe dream. I'm really only interested in CRs, between 03 and 07. For those who have ridden anything like this recently, just how far off is the suspension and geometry compared to an '09/'10 CRF450? That's what I've got now and my general measuring stick. This is just going to be a fun bike, but if it's light years worse I'll save my money.

For those who don't know I'm a +25/30 A rider for at least 3 laps.

The 03-07 CR250 chassis is excellent. It's the engine that needs some work. Buford had some good engine specs for it but I think he's done working on bikes. The '01 CR250 was probably the best of them all. There's a nice looking one on Craigslist right now http://dallas.craigslist.org/ftw/mcy/1882612217.html

I've gotten the two stroke bug lately too. Just picked up a cherry '95 CR250 to race the decade class with the TVRC this fall.

my kid has an 03 cr250 and an 09 450 he took to the 450 real quick, like 1 lap, and said they felt the same, but he liked the 2stroke better.

I am in the market for a two stroke again as well. Mainly because they are cheap to fix if something goes wrong and I don't have a ton of money to throw at a bike right now...

I have a 06 CR250 and the handling and motor are great. I'm a 30+B rider and I'm competitive on mine. Even got my fair share of holeshots on it. I also grew up on 2-strokes and like the lightness of it. I've tossed around the idea of getting a 450 but don't know if I like the extra weight and cost of them. They will get your but in shape!

Shawn - jump on that 2-stroke. As far as your concern, it's not light years worse in the set up. And if it's going to be just for fun, you really can't go wrong with the minimal outlay of cash. Bryan Jackson does the Vet stuff on a 2-stroke and has fun at the front of the pack.

I think you'll find the handling to be better, 02-07 cr250 2t chasis was simply amazing. I had an 05 cr 450 and a 07 kx 450 and my previous honda 2t's (03, 05) handled much better. The motor on the other hand is pretty gutless down low. The yz250 doesn't handle like the honda but has an amazing motor.

i rode a 95 cr500 before and after my 09 450 this weekend at i35. um its way to fast and i liked the 450 set up better. but the 500 got me out of the corner and on top of the bumps quicker. track was rough and at the end of the day i decided that i didn't need to ride the 500 on a rough track ever again. it was like riding a bull when you had it pinned and i never knew where it was going to go.
to know me is to be lucky.
to get me to work on your shit is priceless.
to get your shit working right is not too expensive at all

    Thats Funny!

The ole 500 does take some getting used to thats for sure. I don't think I have ridden the 500 in really rough conditions though.

that 500 was cool to hear and see, and it seemed to get around the track pretty well.

I'll just throw this out there..... even though you guys are talking about a 250, didn't an '04 KX125 win a O/30 B/C championship at Loretta's? 2 strokes aren't dead yet.

shawn, for a fun bike you really cant ask for more. i just picked up a smoker 250 awhile back. its pure fun. the motor is at a huge disadvantage against the 450's in the deeper stuff, then again you can damn near turn inside a kx80 on the silly things. you are fast as hell but you are also a big mofo! just fyi if you planned on racing it at some point, the motor will need a bump.
