Really excellent pics....I can't remember if it was the 77' Whitney National or at the Inter-AMA race there about the same time....but the Saturday night before the race myself and a half dozen buddies had a spot staked out for camping by the river....everyone was pretty much asleep...you could hear a few camps blasting music and generators from motor homes running...about 2 AM..
All of the sudden everyone that was there started yelling and screaming....the whole place got up....and on the top of the hillclimb hill was a pair of car headlights pointing into the night sky...motor revving up...next thing you know the truck moved forward and drove down the hill in the dark...sparks flying off the bottom of the truck...dust and smoke all around them...they made it ...a few loud donuts with the truck at the bottom of the hill and into the darkness they went...for about 15 minutes Lake Whitney Cycle Ranch went crazy...next day the racing was even better...although somebody stole the awning we set up the night before along side a choice section of track....I believe it was Darrel Hollingshead and Eddie Roberts in Darrel's Dad's truck that drove down the hill...
Again wonderful pictures...brought back some memories...thank you

thanks for the comments old man.i must really be gettin old.the first the first time i raced at paradise valley i had fast eddie on one side and barry calloway on the other .i believe hollingshead was in the same class but not sure.the night of the whitney national some guys set up a foosball table in the pits and severall people shined headlights to light the table.i played foosball for a living for 6 months and had just won the oklahoma dynamo championship so i was decent.it was the only time i beat the national pros at anything cause i sure couldnt do it on the track haha.

I lined up with Eddie for the first time in 1972 at Stemmons MX Park in the 100 class....he had already been racing for a while...I believe Jerry Boren was helping him out then...it took a while but I finally beat him a couple times at Stemmons...that is where I met Hollingshead and his Dad also...started into the 125 intermediates on a 73' 125 MX and Darell was on a 125 Duster (enduro) and already was sporting his signature physicality...he was awfully fast on that enduro....I think Eddie skipped the Intermediate class and went straight to the 125 expert class.... javascript:emoticon('8)')

JL-NTI,
I don't think VU Godfather Lord Hance is going to be posting his story. He emailed his story in to me - it included tid-bits of Cedar Springs & Oaklawn marches!
BTW - nice shot Lord Hance

Well not any bashing... but we pushed a few cars around when leaving the orginal Adair's... And we may have mowed down and few gas lamps in those fancy front yards.... no, no that wasn't us.

ok i gotta admit motocrossers and oak lawn werent the best of mix.jeremy hughes and myself were in lucas b an b one night after the supercross.well needless to say a table of cowboys and their girlfriends were sitting in the booth next to us and for no apparent reason jeremy jumped up and screamed what the f are you looking at to those cowboys.well no sooner than the biggest one jumped out of his booth when jeremy from no where had what looked like about a foot long switch blade to his throat .well the guy saw fit to sit back down and jeremy stuck the knife in the back of the booth .it stayed there till we finished breakfast.that was just a sample of some of our adventures with our california friends.last time i heard jeremy was spending a little time in a california institution.gotta love those california guys and life long memories we have all shared.

Wow, I haven't thought about Lucas B & B in years.......about 37 years at that. My uncle used to manage the Exxon station across the street at the corner of Oak Lawn and Lemmon, and used to take me over to Lucas B&B for lunch every day druing the summer months when I worked for him when I was 14 yrs old.
