Hey everyone, a fellow txmxer needs our help.

Will Pattison, aka Broken_Rod aka f2point8, has fallen on some hard times. He had a really bad crash riding a track in New Mexico this past Saturday. He swapped in the whoops, tried to save it and things just got out of control. The result was a head plant over the bars. Will broke his wrist in 5 places and crushed several vertebra in his back. He has had several disk removed from his spine and replaced with a cage which essentially had fused his spine. As of right now, he has no feeling from the chest down... a quadriplegic. Its tragic for many reasons. DPW notified me yesterday morning of his condition, we swapped emails and phonecalls attempting to reach Will or Carol (his girlfriend). I wanted to get an update before posting anything on this site about his condition for privacy reasons... as the news I was hearing yesterday morning was not so good.

A few minutes ago my phone rings and guess who's number on the caller-id? Will Pattison! I couldnt believe it actually... but he sounded so upbeat and positive. He spoke of his wreck, the whoops, the fact he knew something was wrong the second he hit the ground.. and how he told the Dr's just before surgery that he could not be a quadriplegic. They assured him he wouldnt but was looking at a minimum of 6mos recovery, possibly twelve. We chatted for about 25 minutes about many things and I asked how we can help, just after telling me what is most important to him he mentions that he has to go as Carol's arm is growing tired from holding the phone to his ear. For me it's unimaginable to be in that situation and Captain Smooth Will? How does this happen? Regardless it's time to pull our resources together and offer our assistance.

I asked for a mailing address but let's be realistic about this... lets do something that matters. Instead of sending cards and flowers.. they'll need serious help. You see his girlfriend was scheduled to start a new job, tomorrow, out of state. They were in the process of moving. She now has to leave to get to work but will be commuting to help take care of Will from Indiana. Here is what I propose:

Here is what they REALLY need.
1. Frequent Flyer Miles (anyone here got a contact for the airlines?)
2. Donations to help cover cost of travel
3. An old laptop donation so they can stay in contact via Skype or online video conference provider.

***EDIT*** This has changed
Please use Carol's paypal account:
CAROL_STANFILL

He's not asking for handouts, I'm volunteering them if they are available. If anyone has any contact for any of the above please let me know. If you cant do that then please help make a donation to his paypal. He has insurance but mentioned the travel is going to be the worst part for Carol.

Lastly, Will wants to thank everyone for their support and well wishes. Like Andy said in his post in the other thread.. it helps keep him motivated. He honestly sounded beyond motivated to get to rehab and be done with this. If you cant tell from my words then I'll just tell you straight up, it motivated me. Will is one cool dude. During the conversation we discussed the whole Vet rider thing and how smooth he is and how this can happen to anyone. He wanted me to assure everyone he will be fighting his way through this and not be afraid to get on a bike. He plugged the Leatt as well. Be safe everyone, please. Interim.. lets help a buddy out.

Get Well Soon Will.

Thanks for your help everyone,
Aaron

Will, fire starter, bro, I am speechless!

My thoughts are with you and your girlfriend, if there is ANYTHING ANYTHING I can do, let me know. Your one hell of a fighter, you will be back on a bike in no time!

Will is one of the best friends motocross has given me and this is tragic news. Leave it to Will to be positive and upbeat, though - that guy always knows what he wants and how to get it.

Aaron, if you speak to him or Carol, please let them know I am willing to help her pack, get to the airport or anything else. Lubbock isn't far from them and I can make plenty of time to help.

In the meantime, I'll be praying for his health and recovery, as well as for Carol.

I think that is what surprised me the most, his positive/upbeat attitude. He was very matter-of-fact, typical of Will, about his injury but he was quick to point out the successes he's experienced. He is a fighter and you can tell he's one focused dude, failure isnt an option for that guy. He told me to not be afraid to get on that bike and go buy a Leatt. So even when he's hurtin' he trying to help. Right on dude.

Michael, with any luck they'll be reading this so you might have handled the communication however i'll pass it along if the opportunity arises.
I got to thinking last night... 6-12mos recovery all while being away from your loved ones. This is a tough situation from many aspects.

Does anyone have any pull with Delta? I have 105,000 Delta miles I'd like to transfer, but from their site:

...it will take over $1100 just to transfer them. There has to be a better way.

High Lord, welcome to the site.

Thats a good question. On my to-do list for today is contacting the airlines to see if some sort of hardship qualifies for short-term benefits.
I know there are programs for this type of thing but i'm clueless how to make it happen. that being said, i dont have pull with any airline but that's a great idea!

Thank you everyone for all your well wishes and encouraging words. I know that Will appreciates it and it will definitely help him in his fight and recovery.
I have known Will for almost 4 years now and he's like a brother to me. He's actually the reason I'm even here in Texas and working for Tucker Rocky. I met him at a Dealer ride day in Florida back in 2005 and from the start he has been nothing but a wonderful friend. He is someone who has a true passion for the sport, for his family, his friends and most of all - life! This is hefty bump in his journey but with support and prayers he will be back to his ole' self in no time.

I did get an update from his girlfriend Carol (whom by the way is one of the strongest women I know .. She puts up with Will ... so there you have it ! LOL J/K ! ) and here's what she has said "I'm so happy to hear that people are so supportive of Will and he was pleased to hear about everyone's concern. It looks as though he will move rooms tomorrow (7/15). They are moving him to Acute Rehabilitation (and that's GOOD!) .. He spoke to Remkus briefly and gave him an update to post online" ...

This is wonderful news, so keep your well wishes and HUGE PRAYERS coming !!

Thank you again,

I have close to 100k northwest miles I am more than happy to donate, but have no idea how to transfer them. Is anyone connected with a travel expert that could walk people through the transfer process. Also we do a lot with U.S. Airways here at the F.B. I will check with my contacts there for some travel cards.

You can transfer via the carrier website. Problem is - they charge you to transfer the miles.

I am currently awaiting assitance from the corporate travel department here to see if they can some how get these waived. I will keep you posted.

I know its not any of my business but i thought i would post the info that i found on the sticky to help out!

From Jennifer Web
I just got back to Dallas and today was full of little victories, for sure. He will have a long road back, but he is already working 110%. Thank you George and Wayne for everything - I can not thank you enough! And THANK YOU to Shawn Goolsby for driving from Bowie to Dallas to fly with me.

George... thank you for posting all of this... the one thing I would just add is to not send flowers. Will has some pretty bad allergies, but cards and visits would be awesome!

His surgery was five hours Sunday morning where they fixed the issues in his back (removed a few disks, added spacers and some titanium from what I understand) and set his right forearm in a traction device - he broke that in, I think, five places. As George said, they don't see any damage to the cord that would suggest his paralysis is anything more than temporary. Right now he has little movement from the chest down, but showed some very positive signs of improvement just from yesterday to today.

The plan is to move him to a rehabilitation unit at the Covenant Heart Hospital tomorrow and then work toward getting him ready for a move to a long-term rehab facility as soon as he is ready for that.

I hate to hear this happening to anyone, but it hits home when it is someone you know and admire. It is times like these though, that I am proud to be part of the MX community. It is so cool how everyone comes together to help someone in need.
Like everyone has said earlier, Will is one of the nicest, most sincere, cool dudes that I know, and like Remkus said...he is smooth on a bike. I will definitely be saying a ton of prayers for him and his recovery.

After some checking and begging with Delta, there seems to be no way they will waive the transfer fees. What I can do, though, is redeem my miles for tickets and have them issued in Carol's name. Carol, call me when it is convenient to discuss setting up some trips. Mike Nyland 803-507-8665

Thanks go out to Gomer for posting a link to here on Dirtrider.net. I've been swamped from coming back into town on Monday from a long vacation and could not get to it.

The DRN folks know Will and he contributed a ton to the success of our Dirtweek events. He was the reason that Malcom Smith showed up at one event and he also helped canvas vendors for swag for the attendees. He has always been an incredible ambassador to the sport we all love. Be it through helping with events to clicking the shutter to helping someone out that had bike problems.... he's been there. It's time for us to be there for him! This is the DRN thread that has been started: http://www.dirtrider.net/forums3/showthread.php?t=174366

No way I am worried about whether or not Will has a 100% recovery. It is a foregone conclusion. A done deal if you will. Money baby....money. It is going to take a lot more than this to whip his ass. I know it. I know it in my heart. Am trying to put together a few things....I will update.

My bet is that Will goes at least 2 for 1 (maybe better) than what the doctors are predicting.

Havent quit thinking about you since Carol called me a few days ago.

There have been several updates this morning. I'm going to cut to the chase. This is an email sent out straight from Carol:

It has been just over 72 hours since Will's accident.

He is spending his second night on the Neuro Floor at Covenant Medical
Center in Lubbock, TX. We expect that he will move into Acute
Rehabilitation very soon.

Will has a variety of pains, sensations, & feelings in a lot of his
body. His hands are hurting the worse and his legs have the least
feeling. For those of you who do not already know, Will has severly
bruised his spinal cord at his C3-C6, but he has not severed it. He
has the possibility to fully recover.

We believe we have located a reputable facility for his rehabilitation.
It is called Craigs Hospital - they specialize in spinal cord injuries -
and is located in Englewood, CO (just outside Denver). If you know of
this place or any other place, PLEASE respond. We are very busy and
lack a method to search or research facilities.

Presently, Craigs Hospital has a two week wait. Will will remain in
Lubbock at Covenant until it is time to go there.

I must return to work in Indiana. Unless something changes, I will
return on Monday.

FAQs:

What is the address where I can send something to Will?

Covenant Medical Center
NeuroScience Institute -HC568-Pattison
3615 19th Street
Lubbock, TX 79410

(806) 725-0575

What should I send?

Anything but flowers! Any gift is sincerely appreciated, but, Will is
having bad allergies & sinuses all while being in a neck brace and
having to wear oxygen.

Card, notes, prayers, and letters of encouragement are really helping
Will keep in good spirits. Keep 'em coming! I show him every text
message, every facebook post, & he hears every voice message!

Can I come visit?

Yes! Visitors have really brightened his day & help keep him positive.
He is very tired though, & even talking takes his energy.

There are no rules in his current room regarding the time or number of
visitors. He has physical therapy in the room twice a day.

Recommendation: I leave this weekend, come see Will next week!

What do we need? How can you help Will/us?

Will & I need to communicate daily & often while we are apart. We are
getting a laptop from Dennis to use now, and then to continue to use to
Skype. We will need a webcam for this computer.

I need to fly to & from Fort Wayne, IN (FWA) or South Bend, IN to
Lubbock now, and eventually Denver (for Craigs Hospital). I intend to
be there every second I can. Thus, Miles, Rewards, Flight Credits, Gift
Cards - anything of the like, will help me visit Will every single
weekend.

Will's parents will also be traveling to & from Clovis, NM. To get to
Englewood by car is approximately 500 miles and several hours on the
road. Gas and lodging (and possibly flights) will be a large expense
for them.

What is my contact info?

Carol Stanfill

And finally, How is WILL?

He is in good spirits. He has improved since arriving and that motivates
him. He is a fighter & is approaching this in true Will-fashion. He is
working very hard during therapy. When he gets frustrated I remind him
that this is only Day 4 of 365. We are focusing on the positives and the
big picture.

Please pass this email along to the ones who care about Will that didn't
include.

In the near future, I intend to make updates like this to Will's blog.

With love,

Carol

Another update on Will's progress and msg from Carol
New news: Will is accepted at Craig Hospital. Three week wait - he
should me there no later than August 7th.

I need to get from Lubbock to Fort Wayne on Sat/Sun. Does anyone have a
better way than Amanda's 12,500 miles + $100? That flight from Lubbock
to Dallas on southwest is no biggie. The flight from DFW to FWA is $506.

I believe that flight has been taken care of though.

I just got home from visiting Will about an hour ago. I'm happy to say he's in better shape than I had prepared myself for. He's not too beat up and he's as strong-willed as ever. In fact, the first thing I noticed was the stoic look he had in his eyes. The usual glint was replaced with an intense look of determination - something I have always known Will to possess, but something I have never personally seen. That look alone left little doubt in my mind that he is going to pull through this. In true Will fashion, just after describing what happened, he ended the story with, "I'm going to fight this mother 'til the end; I'm going to fight it with everything I've got."

The result of his incredible mindset is already showing. He has full motion of his neck and face and his voice and breathing are as strong as ever. He can shrug his left shoulder and even has limited use of his lower left arm. As we sat there talking, he was constantly working that arm and trying to wiggle his fingers. He also said when Carol rubs his feet, he can feel sensation in both. At one point, as we sat there, he became extremely excited and informed me that he needed to use the restroom. This was the first time he has been able to sense that need, which is a great step forward.

It was tough to see such a great guy and friend in that condition. Had he not been so strong with his eyes and voice, I may have lost it. Funny that I was feeding off his energy when I was supposed to be there to support him. He said that every day he prays to feel pain and while that may be a sign of healing, it's still tough to bear. Like Aaron said, he has at least another week in this hospital before he moves. Will is excited to move to Colorado to focus on rehab and confident that he will continue to heal.

Will has done and seen a myriad of things in his life and he described this injury as "just another adventure." He also mentioned that he is only on the injured list for an extended period of time. That statement, along with the adventure comment, really showed he is focused on riding this thing out until the end and plans on recovering.

I wouldn't say he is in good spirits or that he has accepted this. I would have to say it's the opposite. He has in no way accepted this as his fate and in no way is he chipper. Positive - yes; happy - no. I have never seen someone so determined but, then again, I've never met anyone quite like Will.

He is definitely appreciative of all the support, help, thoughts and prayers. Personally, I want to remind everyone, including Will, that this is day 6. There is a long road ahead and we should not let this fade from our minds; I know Will won't be giving up any time soon.

awesome report!!! Very cool to hear that Will is doing that well. I have and will continue to pray that he is blessed with a 100% recovery. There is no doubt in my mind that it is possible! Will is definitely a fighter and I know he will not let this little "bump in the road" beat him.
Thanks again for the update.

. Had he not been so strong with his eyes and voice, I may have lost it. Funny that I was feeding off his energy

That right there is 100% accurate. I felt the same way speaking with him Tues evening. Matter fact, i was all shakey, fighting it off and then he just took off with the conversation. Midway through it was obvious his mind was made up and there are no options but success. Truth be told by the end of the conversation it was a fore-drawn conclusion this was temporary and you couldnt tell he was hurt by his attitude or sound of his voice.

It's very good to hear of his progress Michael, thanks for the update.

From Carol -

Here is the latest news.

Will has been moved into Acute Rehabilitation at Covenant Medical Center. Same address as below except now: West Tower, Room W423. Park in the West Visitor garage.

He will begin physical therapy 3 hours a day, 6 days a week, starting Monday. Sundays off. This will be an important regimine that he must maintain in order to regain movement in his limbs.

Will is still planning on going to Craig Hospital in Denver. There is a 2-3 week wait unless, through the generous help of Mike Sullivan, we can move him sooner.

Thank you to all those in Denver who have reached out to us. We will be in contact.

The laptop, web cam, & wireless card, and my flight home this weekend has been arranged via Lonnie Mullen & Shermco. Thank you Lonnie!

Thank you everyone who has donated money on PayPal. We have already received those funds & need them badly. I can't say enough to tell you how much we appreciate your generousity.

Aaron Remkus is organizing a Redbull ride day, among other things, for donations. Aaron what is that web address? Thank you Aaron so much.

Crystal, Tracey, Qiana and some of my friends from b-school are coordinating a garage sale to raise money. More details to follow on that.

Thank you so much to Shermco & OsteoMed for the food baskets. We all have been enjoying them and we have plenty of food to last, at least, the next 2 weeks.

I am leaving Saturday or Sunday to return to work. Will needs pictures!!!! He needs things that he can hang on his wall that will motivate him. Simple prints, nothing framed or with glass, please. Pictures, cartoons, words of encouragement, prayers, anything.

Joy, Will's mother, will be staying in Will's room overnight when I return to work. Any love, cards, or break you can give her would be most appreciated.

We have a new motto: "Day 6 of 365." (Big picture focus here!)

With love,

Carol

Sorry to hear about Will, Used to race with him back in the day. I work for Southwest and would be happy to give a few stand bye tickets to Carol to help get back and forth. We fly from Lubbuck to Chicago which is 122 miles from Warsaw. They aslo fly to Indy but I think Chicago is closer.
Carol, give me a call if you need some tickets, again they are stand bye but you should not have any problems. Even if you just want them to get to Dallas or to Colorado, we fly to Denver too.

i may be wrong, but isn't that the hospital that Ernesto Fonseca was in. I met Will a few times at races and at the TORO races when he was running it. Will was a good guy from what I saw. I guess I was very blessed when I broke my neck C6&C7 a few years back and didn't have the problems Will is having but I know what he is going through so hang in there Will and I hope you have a speedy recovery.

The latest info I have (Friday) is he is still in Lubbock. I sent her an email inquiring to Wills progress and if he's relocated yet? I do believe he wasnt scheduled to go to Colorado until later this month.

Here is what she sent out on Friday.

Michael,
Just heard from Carol. Will is still at Covenant in the room mentioned in the above post. Will has therapy 3x's a day so the best times to catch him are after 3pm but before 7pm. You are encouraged to go around that time if feasible.

Progress update: Will is taking it day by day, baby steps. However he has exceeded his therapists expectations and really tackling his rehab program. Mom/Dad appear to be in good spirits and Carol is back in Indiana, while very tired, taking care of business. She will fly back to Lubbock on Saturday. They are expecting to relocate Will to Craigs in Colorado around Aug 3.

I was in very similar situation in 1990 - broken neck at C5/C6, paralyzed from the neck down, 1000 miles from home, waiting list for rehab.

I don't know Will but I would like to help in any way that I can, even if just someone to talk to that has been through it. Please pass along my phone #972-977-9503 to any members of the family. My wife's # is 214-728-2376 and she would be happy to help in any way also. She has been through it from the spouse side and could give some good help as well.

I'm pretty sure I have a ticket on SWA. I'll check and if it is still good then it is theirs.

One thing I learned - attitude is everything. It sounds like Will has his head in the right place.

I went to see Will again today (Thursday) and I might as well have walked in on him at home. He was in bed in basketball shorts and a t-shirts with a buzzed head and shaved face. He had a few visitors, his laptop up and going and was soon to grubbing on a chef salad. The only odd things I noticed were a neck brace and the lack of his goofy photographer hat.

The trauma from his eyes was gone this time. They had returned to reflecting a happy, positive mind rather than belonging to a stoic, wounded individual. The eyes tell more than any other part of the body and it was like looking at the old Will. There was no doubt, no worry, no stress...and much less pain. Hope has been replaced with reassurance. Tests have been replaced with therapy.

First thing is first - Will said the doctors are looking at 100% recovery. He went on to say that 100% recovery can mean a number of things, whether it is walking with a cane or doing motos. Then, Will continued by directing my attention to his legs, which he then moved back and forth and up and down. Finally, he told me that he can't not ride and will be doing everything he can to get back on the track.

And he is only in the second week.

He has rigged up a laptop and a pad so he can start browsing the internet ASAP. He is overwhelmed by the support he has received from the moto community and told me he never would have expected so many people to genuinely care. I told him I wasn't surprised at all. When I told him this site had reached five or so pages of support for him, he flipped out and vowed to begin reading every single one as soon as he was able.

Words can't express the gratitude I saw in his eyes - or, at least, my words can't.

All I can say after today is that Will Pattison is well on his way to a complete recovery. And I can't wait to shake his hand.

I called and spoke with Will last night. His determination is unparalleled. He knows what he must do, and knowing Will - he will take this challenge head-on. He will put theory to practice and he will analyze the situation from every angle and he will adjust and push through.

I was very relieved after speaking with him and hearing his attitude, determination, and the shear strength in his voice. Will power. Yes, that is a bad pun, but it is intended. Call it what it is - Complete and absolute "Will Power".

What means the most to Will right now is support. Just knowing that we are all pulling for him makes his drive and determination that much stronger.

I went and saw Will yesterday. He was able to move all his limbs, wigle his toes and lift his left arm up to scratch his noes. He said every day he gets a new feeling and is now able to feel his blood thiner shot he gets every morning along with feeling the coldness of the alcohol they use to clean the pins on his external fixator.
Today he leaves for Craigs hospital, he seems ready and eager for the next step. I would not be surprised if he makes a 100% recovery and to Will that means being able to ride a bike again moto or street.

He sends his thanks to everyone that has helped.

I received this email tonight from a friend that is friends with Wil and his family. Lets keep him in our prayers as he has a pretty long road ahead of him yet it does seem to be a positive one.

His progress is positive & steady even though he now has an infection but the trip to the hospital (yesterday) has been a tough adjustment. He is feeling like a number, not a person. We arrived much later than anticipated & then got hit with no less than 20 people who needed all sorts of info. The next two to three days will consist of repeating every test, lab, xray, and scan he's had since the accident, along with a few new ones. The doctors seem good & attentive here at Craig. The program is taken very seriously. We will have to make few adjustments to get into the groove here. And hey, It's only day one.

With the minimal info we know now, Will is expecting to be here 3 months. Every person who has assessed him thus far, says they will get him walking!

Address Here:

Craig Hospital
Attn: Patient, Mr Pattison
3425 South Clarkson
Englewood, CO 88113

His present room number is 302B, but we were told we will move - maybe as soon as today.

I know I'm missing people on this email. Please pass the update around.

With love,

Carol

We got an update late last night. Some encouraging news from the WP camp.

Hi Aaron,

Here is the latest update: He has begun moving, albeit slightly, the fingers on his right hand (the one in external fixation)!!! Even his right thumb (notably, there is no movement in the left thumb & both thumbs are his greatest source of pain). Also, he has a bit of wrist flexion in the left hand - huge deal!! And the doctor, after reviewing his latest MRIs, xrays, CTs, ....said that he can stop wearing his neck brace in bed (that's 2 weeks earlier than we thought). He has gained pool priveleges. Ext Fix comes off in two weeks. Tomorrow, he moves into a private room (yeah!).

I go back to IN on Sunday. I will be trying to return every weekend. I haven't had time to update everyone so feel free to post this update.

Hi all,

Ok Carol sent this to us yesterday ..

" After many days & hours of seeking & collecting everyone’s email address…I believe I have created “Will’s Recovery Support Group.” Please let me know if you do not want to be on this list, or if there is someone who should be. I’ll bcc the list from now on so that there are not so many addresses for everyone to have to see.

First, thank you all for your continued love, support, & generosity. We are so thankful to have you in our lives. If you have sent a card, letter, check, email, or package and haven’t heard back from me – please accept my apologies! – and our sincere appreciation. Even if he or I can’t answer the phone at that moment, or respond immediately, we know why you are reaching out to us and believe me, it lifts us up.

Day 40 Post Injury - Day 18 at Craig Hospital

Will had his first medical conference at Craig yesterday. Here are the highlights, exactly how they were delivered to us:

Dr. Mark Johansen, MD

MRI reveals great post-surgery results – no bone fragments, cysts, etc. & plates on vertebrae look perfect
ASIA Classification “C” (Notably, he was only one muscle movement from being classified “D’. A normal adult is an ASIA “E”.)
What is ASIA? http://www.asia-spinalinjury.org/
What is an ASIA Classification? http://www.asia-spinalinjury.org/publications/2006_Classif_worksheet.pdf
Muscles will return at their own pace, can’t quicken their return
Most significant progress will come in the first six months (until mid-January)
Neck brace: wear for 12 weeks when out of bed (until around Oct. 3)
External fixation on right wrist: off next Friday, 8/28; healing as expected
Tentative discharge date: October 22 (after 12 weeks at Craig)
Out-patient rehabilitation will be required after discharge
“The sky is the limit for you!”

Christine, RN

Positive changes everyday
Skin is intact & healthy (no pressure sores)

Rachel, Physical Therapy

Very excited and impressed with Will’s progress – especially his standing (picture on the site already)
When external fixation comes out of wrist, then he can begin pool therapy
Ready for regular bike (no more assisted-peddling/FES bikes)
“Ahead of my expectations at this point!”
Next week, ordering bracing for legs to begin overland walking therapy

Angela, Occupational Therapy

Strengthening is key
Keep working on functional skills – eating, writing, grooming, etc.
Next week, begin new (more advanced) exercise classes

Here is a very nice update from Carol regarding Wills progress:

Happenings since the 40-day update:

· Increased his assisted walking (“Lite Gait”) from 300 feet (at one time) to 525 feet to 792 feet yesterday

· Nerve pain is increased but coming and going on various day & various parts of his body

· Very tired & has muscle soreness

· Renal ultrasound – all good

· Began taking an anti-spasticity medicine 3x/day

· FES Bike – increased resistance by 3x & is riding as far as last week

· Urology appointment – bladder is “healthy”… 4 days later diagnosed with UTI

· UTI making him extremely tired, increases muscle spasms, & achy

· External fixator (on right wrist) – removed Friday after 7 weeks; new custom splint made yesterday; pain level, especially in his hand, has decreased

· Standing frame – standing regularly and practicing “mini-squats” in the frame; problems with his ankles rolling – caused him to fall out of the frame last Friday; ankle bracing & new anti-spasticity medicine should resolve

· New therapy: Acupuncture – Will had 18 needles inserted all over his body yesterday in his “assessment” appointment; he was surprised that he could feel so many of the needles & they hurt a little bit! Should take 48 hours to see results. Tomorrow he will have a massage to help with muscle soreness, muscle stiffness, and to improve circulation.

· Today at 3pm…finally…pool therapy! Will has been waiting for his ext-fix to come off his wrist to get permission to enter the pool. He has some new trick swim trunks.

Here is an update from this morning: If things go well we might see Mr Will online sometime soon. Anywho, here is the latest from Carol:

Hello Friends,

Will had his 2nd medical conference at Craig on September 17th. Overall, his progress is positive although he has had recent setbacks. He had a bad spell with a common medicine given to spinal cord injury patients (Baclofen) that set him back about two weeks. He has stopped that medicine and had to wait some time for it to get out of his system – since then, he has continued to see physical progress. Monday, he began to walk with leg bracing in the parallel bars - about 80 feet total. He has continued to use the Lite Gait (aka Gait Keeper), the FES Bike, and the therapy pool (see attached).

Currently, Will is having lots of throat pain and extreme nerve pain. He is waiting to see an ENT doctor; his spinal cord doctor does not believe his pain has anything to do with his new spinal hardware. Will feels like his medicines (pills) are getting stuck in his throat when he swallows & he has pain day and night in the back of his throat. His nerve pain is constant from head to toe and is, to say the least, becoming distracting as well as physically and mentally fatiguing. According to him, "it's worse than it's ever been and more pain than he thought possible."

I have found us a great home in Warsaw on one of the local lakes. It is on the ground floor & has wide hallways & door frames with a lake view from the master bedroom & living area. It is larger & more expensive than we originally hoped to find (3 BR/2 BA) but it seems to be a peaceful environment for recovery...and let's face it, we don't have a lot of options in a small town with mobility restrictions! I will be able to move us in around the first of November.

Therapy & out-patient rehabilitation in Warsaw is still underway. I am trying to locate a physiatrist, an internal medicine doctor, a physical therapist & an occupational therapist plus the resources that go along with therapy like a PT gym, heated swimming pool, and transportation to & from, etc. That is my next priority.

Will's hospital discharge date is/was still set at Oct 22 but, because we will not be in our new home yet, it will have to be extended until probably the first week in November. It is still undecided how Will can/will be able to make the commute from Denver to Warsaw.

Things are moving along with my new job. I am traveling a lot but that was to be expected. I was able to work in Denver for a few days this week & visit with Will on a Thursday which allowed me to attend his therapy sessions that day. I am still traveling back & forth to Denver every weekend from Friday evenings & Sundays.

Will is using his cell phone more & more every day. He is really good at receiving text messages & emails; answering the phone & responding to email is more difficult. He is starting to respond to text messages – might be a great way to quickly send him some encouragement!

Several have asked if Will needs anything – here is a new idea I am trying out: Amazon Wish List

http://www.amazon.com/wishlist/2XVFA5SGGMXXN/ref=cm_sw_em_r_wl

There should be another update soon with more details about what "out-patient" is going to look like.

We really appreciate all the cards & gifts that we have received and are still receiving. I know I still owe several of you Thank You letters!! Please know that we have received your kind support & we appreciate it!

All the Best,

Carol & Will

Update: Will Pattison, Day 108

From:
Carol Stanfill <carol_stanfill> [Chat now]

Dear Friends,

Will has reached the “home stretch” for his time at Craig. He will be discharged from in-patient care on Thursday, November 5. We will take two weeks to transition from ‘in-patient at Craig’ to ‘out-patient at Craig’ and we will stay at Craig’s Family Housing from November 5 until/around Saturday, November 21. This housing will cost us $45/night but we feel it is the correct way to make the transition because we will have the support of his care team for questions and the Craig resources for therapies, etc. I will be able to stay one week with Will and his mother will stay a little over a week, then we fly to Indiana. So, at the latest, Will will be in our new home for Thanksgiving, which also happens to be his birthday.

Will’s pain level has continually increased – to the point that he has begun experimenting with previous medicines that made him feel so miserable right after his injury. Two common drugs that work for many are Lyrica and Baclofen – they are not working for Will’s nerve pain. Another is Cymbalta and that was discontinued yesterday. He will be discharged regardless of his pain management. I don’t have time to research pain medicines or therapies, so if you have any ideas or suggestions that might work, we would like to hear about them.

Common questions:

Is this nerve pain good or bad? It’s both. Many believe (but no one is sure) that the nerve pain is a symptom of returning sensation and feeling. Will has been making physical progress in spite of this pain. For example, he practices walking in the parallel bars with bracing (bracing currently is only from his calves down to his ankles instead of from him thighs to his ankles) several times a week; he can transfer (with a spotter) from a bed or a chair by standing up, taking a few steps to make a turn, and then sitting back down. As of the past 2-3 weeks, Will has reached a pain level that interferes with his ability to attempt/continue physical activities – not always, but some days it robs him of is his strength to fight.

Will this pain subside/go away once his spinal cord heals? Maybe - again, there are no absolutes in spinal cord injuries. Some people heal and continue to live with this level of pain for the rest of their lives. Others heal and the pain decreases/goes away.

What we do know for sure is that Will is not done fighting. These next two weeks will be the most difficult yet. The pain is working on him – physically, mentally, & emotionally. I will not be there until his date of discharge (or as I now say, “D-Day”) and the loneliness is working on him. The fear of going home is working on him. The road ahead has more “unknowns” than “knowns” and we are both scared. But, what we know for sure is that together we can tackle it, one day at a time.

What we need:

Will needs visitors between now & November 5th. It’s great if you can come for a day or two to visit & go to therapy with him. It would be great if someone could visit over the next weekend. If you can go, contact me – I probably have a place for you to stay for free.

I need a second set of hands for the flights home. This will probably be the weekend before Thanksgiving, possibly Thursday, Friday or Saturday. The flight would most likely be Denver to Chicago O’Hare to Fort Wayne, then driving from Fort Wayne to Warsaw.

I need a ramp that would allow Will’s power chair to climb into the back of Will’s Nissan Titan. (The hospital has recommended that we not get another vehicle and there will be times that Will will need/prefer his power chair over the manual chair. Will does not believe an ATV ramp will work.)

Will needs some words of encouragement to fight through his pain, to take that next step, and to renew his spirit at least until he & I can be back together on a regular basis. Text him, Facebook him, email him – he’ll get it!

With love,

Carol

From Carol:

==========

I know I just sent an update yesterday but I have great news: Will walked with crutches for the first time, just now! He walked about 40 feet. This was outside the parallel bars - still had on his ankle braces and with a spotter, of course. He was so overwhelmed he didn't know what to say when he called me.

From Carol:

Dear friends,

Will has been home since November 20th – it's hard to believe 23 days have passed. It’s been 5 months & 2 days since July 11.

Days before we left, on a good note, he finally showed signs of getting over his last infection which made the traveling much better. Our good friend, Lonnie, made the traveling better than we could have hoped or expected. Also days before we left, on a not-so-good note, our insurance company decided that Will needed to be transferred into another facility in Indiana (i.e. a nursing home) and decided they would not approve/pay for home health care. In their opinion, his case was too complex & they could not guarantee his safety at home. That was certainly a last minute low-blow.

We came home anyway, and through the help of a new, dear friend here locally, we have hired a great company that sends a CNA to our home for two hours every day to help Will with some of the personal activities he can’t quite do for himself.

Will has a new Rehab & Pain Mgmt doctor here – he is a young physician who spent time at RIC (Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago) & has worked with spinal cord injury patients. He has recommended a new nerve pain medicine that seems to be helping (Nucynta). Will has been taking the lowest dosage available for about 2.5 weeks and doesn’t seem to have any nasty side effects like with so many other previously failed pain medications. He is doubling the dosage this week and we are optimistic that this one will provide some much needed nerve pain control. As an additional blessing, it is manufactured by J&J so our insurance covers the full cost.

On Monday, November 30th, Will resumed his physical therapy routine with his new PT (physical therapist), Matt. If the in-patient strategy was slow-and-steady, the new out-patient strategy could easily be called shock-and-aw. Matt is a good listener & immediately put in place a plan to achieve Will’s goal of return to Craig for his 6 month reevaluation in May, walking without crutches…and let me tell you, walking is exactly what Will has done!

On Mondays-Wednesdays-Fridays Will sees Matt. After a barrage of leg extensions, leg curls, stand-sits, lying body bridges, side leg raises, calf raises, and so on – then Will & Matt begin walking around the in-door track. (Something tells me if it was an outdoor track, Matt would have Will walking out there too, regardless of the weather! You can see why Matt & Will will get along just fine.)

When Will left Craig, the most he had walked without sitting (with ankle braces & crutches) was about 150 feet. On Friday, Will walked without sitting (without ankle braces or crutches) about 400 feet. It’s getting old to say “he set a new record” – he keeps setting new records every day!

Will is not by any means ready for “no crutches, no ankle braces” entirely, and he always walks with a spotter, but his new PT consists of a combination – some days crutches, some days braces, some days both, and some days neither. Friday happen to be a “neither” day.

This Thursday, Will met another PT, Sean, who is willing to get in the pool with him on Tuesdays & Thursdays. He too seems like a good personality fit for Will and was even nice enough to offer to pick Will up so I don’t have to leave work twice. As many of you know, Will enjoyed and benefited enormously from aquatic therapy at Craig. Here, at our local YMCA there is a warm pool– heated to about 88-90 degrees (which is still a bit cooler than the pool at Craig). We are very hopeful that the temperature will be comfortable/bearable for Will – if so, this will round out a full week with a variety of therapies.

Will loves our new home and is so happy for us to be together again – both are motivating and stress-relieving. I am picking him up from PT and having lunch with him daily so there is plenty of together time. He is getting around entirely in his manual wheelchair – which is also a new accomplishment since at Craig he used the power chair 99.5% of the time. Will has a new speech recognition software (Dragon) that he is “training” and using while his hand movement slowly returns – hopefully soon there will be regular blog updates & more emails.

There are two upcoming events which are very important to Will & me – the 9th Annual Almosta Race & the Bonita 100. We are grateful that both events will benefit the RiderDown Foundation in honor of Will. We would very much appreciate your support!
