Sunday evening Tyler was riding his R6 and lost control on a winding county road and went through a barbed wire fence, broke his femur, the bone was sticking out of his thigh, broke his wrist, has lots of road rash and looks like he was whipped with a bull whip from the barbed wire and landed in an ant pile, so his feet are covered in blister bites. He was careflighted to JPS and they called us at 10:30 last night to let us know he was here. He just got out of surgery they said he will be here probably through wednesday. I am so sleepy, I was just going to bed when I got the call & Ive not been to sleep yet.... it SUX seeing your child in such pain. They said they may need to put a screw in his wrist but they will check it again in a day or two. I'll keep yall updated.

Tyler had surgery on his femur yesterday, surgery went well. They kept him in recovery for 4 1/2 hours. He was having trouble with his o2 levels and he stops breathing. Then he started running fever. Sheree came up here to sit with him so Bubba & I could go take a shower & a nap and when we left his temp was 102.5. This morning temp is 99.9 and o2 levels stay good as long as he's on o2. Take the o2 off and it drops into the 70s. They are gonna try to get him up today so we'll see how that goes! I posted a few pics on the other topic...who rides street bikes...or somthing like that...Thanks for the thoughts & prayers, we miss you guys!

i spent an extra week in the hospital for that exact thing!! I'd pass out in the middle of conversation for the lack of oxygen! it took them 3 days to figure out that it was the first stages of pneumonia. temp did the same thing - up & down.

2 things if you wanna get outta there quick:
- Talk to the Internal Medicene Doc about getting on Levaquin (antibiotic for pneumonia) - it took about a day or so & my o2 levels went up (worked for me)
- Make SURE he does the breathing thing w/ the volumizer breathing device they give him. they shoulda told me more about this thing post op & I probably wouldnt have had to stay in the hosp for an extra week!! do it every hour he's awake, 15-20 breathes. the little yellow(?) thing on the side should stay in the "BEST" area, and set the level for the larger tube to about 500ml at first & work your way up! breathing slow & consistent is the key! there'll be LOTS of coughing & hacking and, i know it's gross, but he'll hack up bloody phlegm from the capillaries in the lung cracking open during all the coughing. here's the one they gave me: http://www.allegromedical.com/respiratory-therapy-c534/voldyne-5000-volumetric-exerciser-5000ml-capacity-p174158.html

good luck!! I KNOW what he's going thru!! hang in there!

Nut thanks for the info, they gave Tyler that same volumizer and the Resp. therapist comes in 4 times a day for breathing treatments. They said his lungs are bruised and he might be trying to get pneumonia. He had a hard night last night, Kept throwing up and he just threw up again. They were saying when we first came in that he would probably go home Wed, well not now...physical therapy has not come in yet, they were supposed to get him up today. The nurse just told me that he will not go to a normal room he will stay here to be monitored, but from what I hear about this place, you don't want to go to a normal room. So far all the Drs & staff where we are have been excellent. He is sleeping now...just got a dose of morphine and his oxygen is reading 87 with the oxygen on. Actually she just came in and turned it up, it was reading 77. They think his collarbone is broke also but that is NO big deal...lol....if anyone wants the pics and can't see them on here just email me...hsmxmom17@aol.com

Not alot of change today. His fever goes up & down. Oxygen levels drop when he takes off his oxygen. His lungs were really hurting him today. Physical Therapy came in and got him set up with a walker and he walked around the unit VERY slowly. But that was a BIG step! Our AC is still out, this is the busy season for that, but I DO want it fixed by the time Tyler comes home. Thanks for all the thoughts & prayers! Keep it up! :o)

O2 saturation and the fever are KEY things to keep under control. JPS is a great facility!!

Today started off rough. They put him back on IV antibiotics and he hasn't had a fever since about noon. He was in alot of pain for most of the day. Still having the issues with breathing and O2 saturation levels. Got him out of bed to sit in a chair for only about 5 min and his heart rate shot up to almost 160. I fianally got him to eat some chicken noodle soup today and he kept that down. He has been throwing up pretty much every time he tries to eat. Tried to get him to eat crackers so he could take his meds and he said " I'm NEVER eating crackers again!" hahaha When we left tonight he was feeling better. Here is a picture from his walk today. He didn't walk near as long as yesterday because he said he couldn't breathe. Oh and the AC got fixed today! yea!!

Greg you are right about JPS...I was worried because I've heard horror stories but I have no complaints so far. The surgeons and staff where we are have all been excellent! Even the nurses tell me that you do NOT want to go to a regular room there though!

hey, exactly how long did you have to stay in for the pneumonia? Of course the Dr came in while Bubba and I were gone to lunch. Tyler said Dr said he has the bad kind in both lungs, what ever that means. His birthday is the 17th and I'm guessing we will be in the hospital for that. What "kind" did you have? They have him on 3 different IV anitbiotics and the breathing treatments.

the short answer: 6days

the long one: my bone doc had me set for rel on Mon 5/26. nurses came in to chk my vitals & found O2 levels way low for my age/health. it took them 2days to refer me to Int Med Doc. She came in Wed nite 5/28. also, I got the 'proper' instructions on the breathing app then. Sat morn 5/31 about 7a, we were rollin on the way back home!!!

not sure what the 'bad' kind is - find out who the Int Med Specialist is & INTERROGATE them. When I was in Brownwood, I had a really good one & she answered all my questions...when I wasn't passing out! LOL!

my type was Pneumonitis: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/pneumonitis/DS00962/UPDATEAPP=0

I think the key to kicking mine, after I got all the correct info that worked for me, was a combination of the antibiotic used (1 type - levaquin: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/drug-information/DR600845 - hey it works on anthrax...gotta be good, right?! :) had it on IV & chgd out the bag every 4hrs if memory serves me well, then sent me home w/ 7days worth of tabs), the breathing trmts (woooo - made me cough like crazy!), USE the breathing thing & cough like your life depends on it, lots of water, & KEEP pushing - even when u don't feel like doing what you're supposed to...DO IT!

I remember the thing that bothered me the most was around wed during my stay, when I tried to move from the bed to a recliner RIGHT beside the bed & I dang near passed out, figured it was hi time to start asking a lotta questions & let's figure out what we can do to kick it.

Hang in there!!!

THat sounds like exactly what he does. Bone Dr released him to go home on Thursday but he kept running fever and O2 was in 70's Int Med Dr came in Fri evening and scheduled all the tests. Then Sat morning nurse said tests results were pneumonia and Dr came in while we were out. The bad thing about JPS is that none of the Dr's have a schedule, its just whenever they can get by there because of working other trauma cases so we can't plan on being there when the dr is, and Tyler can't remember most of what they say. I try to make sure he has a good cough session right after they give him pain meds, it hurts SO much. He hasnt' been able to take a walk since Thursday either and thats not good. I asked them to get physical therapy up there yeterday so he could walk but they haven't been in yet. They won't let me walk him with out PT there. ITs a major ordeal getting him out of bed, his heart rate skyrocktes and he cant breathe. This really sux!

Sorry I havn't updated. He's doing ok. Got the cast off his arm and put in a velcro splint. He is still having alot of pain and swelling in his leg. In fact we made 2 trips to the ER last week because of the pain. Apparently since they had to cut the tendon in his knee to put the rod in his leg, this is normal. They said it will be about 6 MONTHS before it is healed completly. So basically he had a knee surgery on top of the femur surgery. SUX He's pretty bummed. The Plesa's came by for a visit Sunday and brought him a Sprint Car Racing video game for his computer so he's been shut up in his room playing that 24/7! He loves it Thanks guys! In fact, he got up this morning, I gave him his pain meds, then after they kicked in, he said " I wanna try to race Sat night" I was like yeah right...lol It hurts just riding in our truck going over bumps, but hey if it helps him get well sooner to think he can then go for it! Oh and Huffster...he's talking about getting another dirt bike now too. I think he's bored...lol
