Please keep Thomas Schuler in you THOUGHTS & PRAYERS !
Many of you know and have watched Thomas Schuler (local pro) race forever. $mith #253 (one of Thomas's best friends) just called me and said Thomas crashed today while practicing and was air-lifed to JPS in Ft. Worth this afternoon. Thomas has been un-conscious since the crash, and has major bruising and swelling in his brain. Aaron said it does not look real good at all.
I have posted some pics of Thomas (yellow gear) at the Five8 Christian Ride Day in December & some local results of Thomas in the pro class a couple of years ago. Thomas is by far one of the nicest, most laid back guys I have ever met around the track. He has raced in front of us forever, and also throws down the DFWFO pit bike events. Please keep Thomas in your thoughts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will be at Freestone this weekend, and will try to update when I can.

Thank you for all of your thoughts and prayers... I went to see Thomas at the hospital earlier. He is not doing too well at all, but he has always been very strong and will fight through this. Thomas is the type of person who never gives up no matter what. He has been one of my best friends for a long time, and something inside of me tells me he will pull through this. It's tough to stay positive right now with the doctors saying there is a slim chance, but knowing how strong a person Thomas is, it gives me hope. Please pray for Thomas and his family. The next few days are going to be the most critical. Thomas you can do it man!

Holy Cow -
Just got in from Freestone's race... I pitched the donation idea at 6:15pm (once racing got under way) By 12:30am - 6 1/2 hours later, the Texs motocross community that was in attendance literraly kept pouring $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ in like mad. I can't even begin to tell you how SUPPORTIVE everyone was with their donations. One guy gave $250... then an hour later he came back and gave another $100. Two young girls came up and donated both of their entire week's allownace. Everything from $1's to $100's were thrown at us.
So many people just kept coming up and giving, giving, giving.... It was a great showing of the true motocross close-knit family enviroment that exsist amongts us.
In just a very short 6 1/2 HOURS ---- The Texas motocross community out at Freestone donated roughly an astonishing $2,200
We were on the phone through-out the night with Thomas's family, and they are truly THANKFUL for all the Thoughts and PRAYERS, as well as the $$$ raised.
Thank you everyone !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's awesome SG! Any updates on Thomas?
Well - there were a lot of friends and family up at the hospital today. Visiting is very strict right now, and the family/hospital is very selective on visits (understandabe), as there has to be Total Silence in the room. Thomas is still in a coma and it has been 48 hours now. Thomas's mom said that the docs told her that the first 48-72 hours are the most important, and things have not gotten worse at this point. As you can imagine, Thomas is hooked up to every type of monitor known to man & has a bolt drilled into his head to monitor brain-pressure. From all accounts today..it seems that the brain pressure monitoring is hubbering right around where it needs to be...which is a good sign.
Thomas is definitely not out of the dark yet, so Please continue to keep #977 in your Thoughts and Prayers. Right now it's all about WAIT, HOPE & SEE!
This has grabbed a hold of a lot of past/current racers, friends & family. The Schuler family THANKS ALL OF YOU for everything!

Thomas, as Shand said, is one of the nicest, most laid back, genuinely nicest guys you could meet. This sucks, but he will pull through. Just please, everyone keep him, his family, friends and loved ones in your prayers. The power of prayer is awesome. I truly believe he will have a 100% recovery and that the Lord will be glorified through all of this. All of us at Five8 MX will be keeping him in our daily prayers.
I also want to trow out MAD PROPS to Shand G. and his efforts on the mic Saturday night @ Freestone. He did an awesome job of keeping Thomas and his family on everyone's minds during the race. And thanks to everyone who shelled out $$$$, it was a true testament to the MX community!!!

I just wanted to drop a note here and thank everyone who is keeping Thomas in their thought and prayers and for the unbelievable support this MX community has shown for Thomas. I was told about this forum and wanted to read the posts, I didn't make it through without getting tears in my eyes, so please forgive me if this sounds like I am rambling as this has been the worst weekend of my life. This is the latest I can share about Thomas's current condition. Thomas's body is strong and he is breathing on his own now, they have adjusted the respirator and he is controlling his own breathing. This is obviously a good sign. They have been monitoring the pressure in his head for the last two days, and those readings have looked good, and they may remove that sensor later today. The last CT scan which was done showed no change which means the bleeding in his brain stem has appeared to have stopped. Right now they are doing another scan to gage his progress and then will do an "EEG" (not sure if I got the letters right) but it will measure activity in his brain, first time this has been done. As of this morning he has not responded to the neurological tests that they continue to do. When they back off the medication that is keeping him sedated he hyperventilates so he is not ready for that yet. I have picked up on some conversation amongst the doctors and nurses here, they are saying his progress to this point is amazing for his injury. Any one that knows Thomas knows that you can't tell him he can't do something, because he will prove you wrong. Right now Thomas needs all of the prayers we can get for him, so keep praying and ask any one you know that believes in God to pray for a complete recovery. I not only pray for Thomas's recovery but for God to keep every one of you safe every time you climb on your bikes. Thanks again for all your support. Fred

Thomas continues to do well, the swelling pressure is down significantly this afternoon allowing the medication keeping him sedated to be lowered. Still waiting for the report on the EEG from yesterday, but the attending nurse told me that he believed it looked good, nothing that seemed to alarm anyone. Thomas has continued to improve. I finally was able to obtain results from the EEG test taken a couple of days ago, I was told the test was intended to detect seizure activity that may be masked from the drugs keeping him sedated, test looked fine. He is controlling his own breathing through the respirator again today. He is no longer receiving the medicine that has been keeping him sedated, and has opened his left eye a couple of times. The doctors are very pleased with his progress, and we are ecstatic! Please continue to pray for 100% recovery.

THANK YOU LORD! How awesome is that! It is also awesome to read these post from his mother and father who obviously love him very much. His mother was correct when she posted "Today is the present, because it truly is a present". Man...I need that tattooed across my fingers so I can read it all the time!

Thomas had the respirator removed today and is breathing completely on his own. He didn't tolerate attempts to wake him, with his pressures shooting up and requiring additional medications and several hours to get him back under control. Still a long difficult road ahead. Please keep praying.

Hello everyone,
Chris Daubitz with Jyro Signs here. I just mailed out the first batch of stickers that were placed, so be on the lookout.
Cody did a great job designing the sticker. I want to thank you guys for letting me be involved, and calling upon me to get involved with this. I have always tried my best to come to the aid of a rider in need, as so many did for me back when I got hurt. Many of you are still dear friends of mine after all these years & the moto community is a strong one. As a former local Pro who was paralyzed in 1994, I know first hand what #977 Thomas and the Schuler family are going to be up against for a long time to come. It sounds like there have been steady, slight, gradual improvements, but we need to keep helping for as long as we can. They have a long road ahead of them. Please keep ordering and I will keep printing !

Again, we can't thank all of you enough for all the efforts, thoughts and prayers so many people are providing for Thomas. Thomas had a rough day yesterday, as again the ICU Doctor stopped his pain medicine in a attempt to wake him. After pressures heart rate and breathing became out of control, the Neurosurgeon has told the ICU staff to get him sedated and to stop further attempts without his consent. He has been resting comfortably since then and just needs more time fore swelling and bruising to heal. Please keep praying as this is a marathon not a sprint. Fred

Thank you all for everything you have done and are still doing for Thomas! I wanted to inform you all that we are working to organize a benefit race for Thomas during May at Holeshot Valley. A specific date has not been set and there are still many other details we need to work on. We are planning to have an auction, live music, food, and some good racing! We need a lot of help, as Holeshot does not have lights, portable toilets, nor concession. We need all the help we can get, please contact Todd @ 817-204-7745 or email myself at Crystal_08@msn.com if you are able to help with any of these items! I will send updates with more details as we get closer to pulling this together. Thanks again for everyone's love and support!

Hello Everyone,
Sorry Haven't written, but I focus all my energy into Thomas and God. I Love you all so much for your support and for being in my sons life. We are all truly Blessed. Thomas looks wonderful this morning, as the last few days have been very rough for him. I have just left his room and it is the most peaceful and comfortable I have seen him since this nightmare started. We know he hears us and sees us when he opens his eye. He was very focused on his Father this morning when he opened it, and was responding to all of us. We are taking turns now, as we don't want to confuse him, not knowing whats going on behind those eyse.
You have all been so Wonderful, and I will never be able to show my gratitude enough. Thomas is going to be so touched by all of you, and is going to be overwhelmed when he reads all of these Blogs.
Thank you so much Everyone.
Keep Praying.

Our community is awesome! I think if all the tracks work together, we will be able to really help the family and Thomas financially. It's not the most important thing, but hopefully it will help the family to be able to be off work to be with Thomas. Keep those prayers going! We are!!

Update - Thomas is continuing to slowly improve, The pressure monitor in his head has been removed, with the doctor saying he is past the danger point of further brain injury caused from swelling. The last CT scan showed marked improvement with the swelling and bruising healing. He is breathing strong on his own and has been off the respirator now for the last day and half. They have stopped the constant pain medication drip to try to get him to wake, but has not responded much unless he is agitated and that causes his heart and breathing to rise to fast requiring sedating with a shot. The plan was to move him out of ICU this afternoon to the next level of care down, but that is now postponed until at least tomorrow. I have been told that you take two steps forward and then one back, that seems to be the way it is going, but he is improving. He still needs all the prayers and positive thoughts he can get while on the road to a full recovery.

April 24th, 2008, 06:46 PM
Thomas is still in ICU. As of a couple of hours ago he stopped receiving the pain med through an IV, but still receives it through a patch on his arm. If he continues to tolerate it, he may be moved out of ICU in another day or so. All his vitals are strong and he continues to breath on his own. He is not showing to much response yet leading the ICU Doctor to say it may be a while for him to wake up and will probably require a lot of Rehab when he does, but we know that is in God's hands. We ask all for continued prayers for his FULL RECOVERY.

I want to start by cautiously saying, that Thomas has been moved out of the Acute ICU area to what the hospital refers to as the PCU or Progressive Care Unit. Again cautiously I want to say that this morning Thomas has begun to show signs of wakening from the coma. The reason I am saying this cautiously is because of yesterday’s conversation with the ICU Doctor when he told us that he would probably be in a coma for quite some time. It is very difficult at times not only to deal with the ups and down’s of the past two weeks, but also trying to post accurate information. It is very easy to get excited when things progress and he is showing positive signs, and very hard when they seem to regress or not improve, and we have had plenty of both. When I check this site while waiting between visiting hours and see the continuing growth of the number of views this thread has had these past two weeks, now over 6,000 It overwhelms me and makes me proud that my son is the kind of person that has made this many friends or at least left a positive mark on so many people to want to check on him and pray for his recovery. I am looking forward to the day when he also can see this. I believe that all the prayers are and will continue to be answered. Again I thank everyone for everything from the bottom of my heart. Please keep praying.

As his father mentioned he has been moved from ICU to a ProgressiveCareUnit and one of the main neuro doctors did mention that Thomas has not shown responses indicating that he will be coming out of this coma anytime soon. He is just doing his job ;-) We understand that he must be straight forward and do his best not to give families a false sense of hope. However, we are doing our jobs and staying positive and non-stop prayers. Thomas is somewhat responsive to his family and myself. He was able to give us a "thumbs up" when instructed and gives us signs that he is listening. For anyone that has had the pleasure of meeting Thomas, knows how stong-minded he is. Thomas was never one who enjoyed school, and loves to show that text books aren't always right! He will prove that HIS LIFE won't be determined by some 5 year old used medical book. We have stronger faith than ever and being in the room with him gives me a feeling of releif. He looks AWESOME! Everytime I go in there, they have removed a wire, needle, tube, something is always gone. Which means he's doing all the work himself, and that's a spectacular sign! It will be a long recovery, but with all the love and support Thomas has, we have zero doubts he will once again defy the odds. I want to say THANK YOU to everyone again for everything! I am looking forward to seeing everyone out at River Valley for the Five8MX ride day May 18th! I will update again with anything new.

As of Sunday evening Thomas has moved completely out of the ICU department. He is now on a general floor 11th. He has begun to wake up and stay alert for short periods of time, and is responding some to questions. The doctors are encouraging familiar faces and voices to help his brain "re-boot" I don't believe it will be to long before we will be trying to find a Rehab facility that will take him in. We keep hearing from doctors that the lack of a good health insurance may make it hard to get into a good rehab facility, but I believe that God will continue what he has done for Thomas and the right door will open for him. He still has a long road ahead, and I continue to ask for all your positive thoughts and prayers to help him reach full recovery.

Hello Everyone,
Thomas is healing and as you all know he will have a long track ahead. Thank you for all of the prayers and support again, and again. Please keep them coming, and I keep all of you in my prayers everday. He recognizes us when we are with him, and follows us around the room. He is also letting us know that he is not liking the neck brace, and lets me know when he is uncomfortable with his shoulder and right arm. We are working on moving Thomas to a Physical Therapy Facility to stay until we get to the next step. I read to him, play DVD's for him, and his Mp3 for him. It is critical right now to keep his mind stimulated, even if it looks as though he is sleeping. For those who spend a lot of time around him, 30 minutes 1 day a week right now would be wonderful....
You can play a Video game, or just talk to him about normal stuff. Remember I'm his Mom, and no one wants to hear their mom all day and all evening. You can call me....
Thank you again everyone.

Thomas has been improving every day and is still showing strong signs of a good recovery. I don't want there to be any misconception on his condition, however. Thomas is still in and out of consciousness and is unable to speak, get up from bed, or perform any basic funtions. He is able to recognize when someone is in the room and will follow you with his left eye when you are moving around. He is working very hard to open his right eye and has been able to do so briefly a couple of times. He wears a neckbrace at all times, his right arm is in a sling and there are several places on the right side of his body that are badly bruised and swollen still, which have been x-rayed [again] within the last day or two. Friday there will be an orthopedic surgeon coming to examin his right arm and shoulder, as we believe a lot of his pain is coming from that area. When Thomas is awake he is able to communicate by using his left hand, holding up his fingers on command, as a way to answer our questions to him. It is still unclear how much he can understand, but he is definitely responding and making a big effort to communicate. As his mother mentioned, it would be good for him to hear some familiar voices...the visiting hours have changed now that he has been moved from ICU. You may now visit from 6am - 10pm anytime. [Instead of only every 2 hours for 30 minutes] We would like to limit the amount of people that enter his room at one time, as it can be confusing or overwhelming, but would love for his friends to come visit!!! Please keep Thomas in your prayers!

Hello Everyone,
It is good for Thomas to receive visitors right now, as it is stimulating for him, even for only 15 to 30 minutes. He may be asleep but can still hear you and has been waking up for short periods of time. It does need to happen with only a few people at a time, but his friends definately are great medicine right now. If you want to come but aren't sure feel free to call me on my cell 972-467-3540....I'm sure some of you have more to talk about to him as far as music, MX, and just good ole conversation from his peers.
Thank You again for all the Prayers, and I pray for everyone everyday. We still have a long road ahead of us as Chrystal stated. The things that Thomas are accomplishing are huge, but also small baby steps. He still has the Trach, has Feeding Tube, and is only moving his left arm, slightly moving head, and few other things which like I said are HUGE Progress for all of us, especially him.
God Bless all of you

I know there are a lot of people checking this site for updates on Thomas’s condition so I wanted to post one this morning. Not much has changed physically since Crystal described his condition a couple of posts ago. It is clear that Thomas is aware of his condition and can answer questions by blinking his eye or using his left arm depending on what you ask him to do. He pointed out all of his injuries one at a time and is aware that he is not seeing out of his right eye yet. We are still waiting for the MRI on his neck, shoulder and elbow, it was scheduled for yesterday but the nurse failed to plan ahead and have him sedated enough to lie still and allow the scan to be completed, so he was returned to the room. He is rescheduled for today, hopefully it will get completed. All of these things are good signs and should allow him to progress once he gets into a rehab facility. We are hopeful that this coming week we can get the right facility to accept him…but still not a done deal. As always all of your positive thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated and please continue to pray for a full recovery and to have the right door open for him.

hey i have not heard any news lately on thomas how is everything going?
kovacevick
May 11th, 2008, 12:48 AM
Sorry for the delay in updates. Thomas has been awake a lot this past week, but is very agitated. It is a 24/7 job to watch and take care of him. Now that he is not in ICU the nurses only stop in every couple of hours, which in his state is not anywhere near enough. Although he is agitated, the doctors say that this is good because the nerves in his brain are trying to reconnect. It's not clear how long this stage of agitation will last, but each afternoon he has episodes that last the majority of the day and into the evening with a small rest [after the right amount of medication] then starts back up in the middle of the night and lasts through mid-morning. He has been reaching for his IV's, and all other tubes resulting in both of his arms being restrained. Unfortunately, when these episodes are taking place we can not do anything but talk to him and try to keep him calm. It is very exhausting mentally and physically for him as well as it is for us.
On a more positive note, he is giving so much effort and taking many steps toward recovery! He passed his "swallow study", which means we can spoon feed him water and jello [about 10 teaspoons at a time], but still receives his main meals through a feeding tube. The speech therapist has given us a valve that is similar to a cap/button, for his trach. The valve has holes in it that re-route the airflow from the his throat to his mouth and nose, which also passes through his vocal chords allowing him to speak. He has not been able to form any words, but does make an effort and we can at least hear some noise coming out. We are only allowed to leave the valve on for a few minutes at a time, so speaking may not come around for some time.
He is very adamant about trying to do things on his own, and takes the tooth brush from me with his left arm and is able to do a little scrubbing on his own. He can hold the spoon when we're feeding him, but his muscles aren't quite steady enough to keep the contents from spilling. He gets frustrated that he can't do things on his own, and seems very irritated that he can not move his legs yet or really move anything besides his left arm. Although, I will mention he has a grip that will literally break your finger or several. We have seen some movement from his right hand today and he is keeping his right eye open as well, but does not seem to be focusing with it yet. Focusing will probably take a while considering he landed on the right side of his head and it has been shut for a month now.
He has been cleared from his neck brace and his shoulder is not too bad. There is a small tare and severe internal bruising, but surgery will not be necessary. They were unable to get the MRI completed on his elbow because the machine is not open, and they would of had to lay him on his stomach which is not possible due to the trach and feeding tube. However as time passes, it doesn't seem to be causing him as much pain.
All of these things are SO good and his strength and effort has been absolutely amazing. We are still searching for a rehab facility with charity beds available, which is seeming near impossible to come by. We aren't giving up and as he becomes more responsive more facilities should come to evaluate him. Please keep praying and thanks again for everything!

Five8MX is hosting a ride day at River Valley MX this Sunday, May 18th! Hope to see you all there! I saw a post under the announcements that the paypal account is now closed and over $600 was raised! THANK YOU for all of you donations and support!!! Thank you Cody and Chris for all of your time and hard work!!! I still have stickers to sell if there is anyone that would still like one. I will be out at Rivery Valley this weekend and am willing to ship any for those who are too lazy to make it out to the track. Tony Miller is working on getting a spot open for us at the National to sell food/refreshments. It may not work out - his vendor program is full, but if so I'll let everyone know. Again, thank you to everyone for the donations and all the help put into making them and getting the word out!!! And thank you for everything and to everyone I'm forgetting. I'll be keeping you posted on Thomas' changes and improvements!

Shand,
Do please tell the Schuler's that we are thinking about them and praying
for Thomas' quick recovery. He has always been such a polite young man
and very friendly towards me and my family. I know Kyle likes him
immensely. Thank you again.

Just got back from a little visit with good old Thomas. He really has surprised me with his progress as he was doing a pretty good job of eating some food. Well it wasn't that nicest looking food but for Thomas i bet it was great change from his other stuff. he looks better every time i see him. His left eye is working fully and he looks all over and follows you around when your talking to him. The right eye is not working as well but hopefully it will start up soon. They have a cap over his trec. tube where he is able to try and talk. It's still tough to make out what he is saying but you can figure out some things. He is such i fighter. That look in his eye that he gives you when your talking to him. I see the same old Thomas in that eye. Determined... He has a long long road ahead but Thomas is going to do everything he can to make it as fast as he can. As always him and his family needs all the prayers they can get and we will leave the rest up to god who truly knows what type of person Thomas is.

Thomas has really made a lot of progress this last week, his trach tube has been removed and he is talking a lot. It is still hard to understand everything he is saying but at times it is very clear. It is no surprise, that Crystal seems to communicate the best with him. The last few days they have put him in a chair for a while, and yesterday he was able to sit outside for a short time which he enjoyed. He may have the feeding tube removed Monday, as he is eating all of his food now himself. I was surprised when I asked him to sign his name on some paper work, he took the pen from me and proceeded to write his name. All these things show huge progress, causing some of the staff here to go out of their way to try to help him. His right eye remains the same, and will be reevaluated this coming week. We are waiting on a decision hopefully by Monday from Arlington Rehabilitation hospital which evaluated him last Thursday, they apparently have a bed available and the administrators are reviewing whether to offer it to Thomas. Right now this is his best option as he needs to begin rehab soon, to continue his progress. The pressure will start getting greater to push him out of here next week with or without a bed at a rehab hospital available for him. It is very clear that God has had his hand in Thomas's recovery and I believe he will continue to bring him back. The prayers from all his friends, family & people that just care are being heard and are really appreciated. Please continue to pray and say a special prayer for a door to open for Thomas at a rehabilitation hospital.

Thomas is continuing to slowly improve each day. They are small steps, but each one is important to his recovery. He's been moving his toes on both feet, bending his left knee and raising his left leg about 7-9 inches off the bed. We've been taking him outside almost everyday, which he seems to enjoy and tries to pull himself out of the chair. He has been able to use the bed rails and pull himself almost to a sitting position by using only his left arm. Just earlier this week his brother was able to get him to straighten out his right arm, which he usually keeps bent as if if were still in a sling and rests it on his chest. Since then, he's had a little more movement out of it. After the first couple of days of him speaking, it's really slowed down. He only says a couple words a day now, but is much more clear when speaking. He did say that he wants to get up and walk, he wants to go to rehab, and he wants a beer. He whispers a lot, so low that it almost looks as if he's just moving his mouth with no words coming out. His feeding tube has been removed and he's on a regular diet now. Of course, hospital food is hospital food. He's still quite disoriented and confused, but at times knows exactly what is going on and what he wants. We are still working hard to find a rehab facility to accept him on a charity status. We've had a few consultations, still waiting for an answer. TRSF is allowing us to work one of their drink stands at the Freestone National and using the profits to help out. THANK YOU JENNIFER!!! Also, thank you to Five8Mx, River Valley MX, and everyone who made it out! Soon, we will be hosting a get-together at Thomas' parents house to continue with fundraising. We'll have a 50cc track, concession, and are working on live music. We'll have a date soon, and will post the flyer once we get it. For those of you who made it out to the DFWFO Halloween party last year...same place, new track. As always, thank you to everyone for your love & support. I'll be keeping you updated.

Thomas has been moved to Arlington Rehab on a charity status for two weeks. We are hoping to see some good physical improvement. Arlington Rehab does not specialize in neuro rehabilitation, but he will be getting about 3 hours of combined physical, occupational, and speech therapy Mon - Fri. This is a great start!!! We are still working hard to fundraise so that after his charity time runs out, we will be able to get him into another rehab facility or buy more time at Arlington, if he seems to be getting the care that is desired. He will still need a lot of time in a rehab facility that specializes in cognitive rehab and also some outpatient rehab care as well, which is what all of the funds will be going towards that we are able to raise. We're talking $24,000 - $36,000 a month and looking at 3-6 months, so we have a ways to go! He did tell me that he was pissed at himself for crashing [although I don't think he remembers it] and I can see his frustration being stuck inside for yet another summer. As this is not his first major injury...he knows what kind of work rehab demands. A lot of the tasks they ask him to perform during rehab are simple and I can see the irritation because he knows how to do them, but getting the brain to send the right signals so that his body will perform them is where the struggle is. He told me that he couldn't figure out what was going on in his head, which tells me he doesn't realize the severity of his injury yet. He still hasn't been talking much and we've been informed that he may be falling into depression which is common for TBI [traumatic brain injury] patients, but is important to do everything we can to keep his mind focused on positive things. Thomas is an all or nothing type of guy, I KNOW he'll pull through with a full recovery! I see the determination in his eyes. He wants it.
He seems to respond the best when his friends are around, but we still have to limit the amount of people in the room. If anyone would like to visit Arlington Rehab is located at 2601 W Randol Mill [right off 30 and Eastchase from the East or 30 and Fielder from the West] It's easy to miss so feel free to call for directions...972-921-1603. He stays busy all day from 7 AM to about 5:30 or 6 PM Mon - Fri, we would like to keep from any distractions during this time of the day, afterwards is fine. Visiting hours end at 9 PM and the weekends there isn't anything going on...come anytime.
June 28, 2008 will be the date for the 50cc party. $10 Admission, BYOB, concession, camping, raffle & music is all the detail I have...so be looking for the flyer soon.
Also as I mentioned Thomas' brother and I will be working a drink stand at the Freestone National SUNDAY JUNE 8, 2008...[still need to find out where the stand is located] and all profits will go to Thomas' recovery fund, so come buy a drink!!!
Many thanks to everyone for the prayers, they keep bringing positive energy into this fight...so keep 'em coming our way!

I gave some bad information...the pit bike party is $10 Admission. I edited the last post. Sorry about that.
Not much change in Thomas' status. He is still not talking, the therapists are juggling some ideas as to why this may be. We are constantly learning and have realized a lot about over-stimulation, and the more we can refrain from doing so, the better he seems to comprehend information. We may be dealing with a new injury, but staying positive and open to all possibilities. His left knee has tripled sizes since the beginning of this week. We're hoping it has to do with him being laid up for 50 days then being thrown into 90 minute sessions at the gym 2x a day, 6 days a week. With it only being his left knee, we may be looking at ligament or tendon injury.
We will be taking him home next Thursday, June 12th. Not because he is ready to go home; his time on the charity bed ends Wed. afternoon. We are scrambling to get his parents house remodeled so that everything is wheelchair accessible. Even though he still needs a lot of rehab, I think after 2 months of being in a hospital environment, home will be good medicine. Familiar surroundings can be very beneficial for his type of injury. I know you will all continue to help us through this long road of recovery and we appreciate every step you take with us! I am so grateful for this magnificant mx community!!!
We've got a lot of work cut out for us this next week, so I will be in touch as soon as time allows. Hope to see you all out at Freestone this Sunday!

Hello Everyone,
As you all know by now, we are constantly busy with Thomas, and everyday life. We brought him home to Palmer Thursday the 12th. he seems relaxed and has been talking more. we set him in the recliners, put him in the pool, and take him outside in the evenings in the shade. We work with him on speech, and everyday details, bathing etc..
We believe this will be some of the best medicine for him. This next week we will be finding a Doctor, and a re-Hab Facility to drive him to. He desperately wwants to stand on his own. He and his Steve (step-dad) stood last night for about 15 minutes practicing balance. He also is rolling over in the bed on his own. He continues to try to pull himself up in the chairs with his left arm, and bend his legs on his own. When Steve had him in the pool, he told him to try to move his legs back and forth, as this will strengthen the muscles, which he was able to to for a short moment.
I just want to tell you all, how much we appreciate you, and your support through this and the PRAYERS. The power of prayer is real. We have a positive outlook, and I know my son, and he will prevail. We live in the country, so if anyone wants to visit, or stay the night we have an open door policy here. There are trails, the 50 track now, fishing and a pool. Good ole relaxation from the city.
Thomas still needs to see his friends. Things should settle down here this next week and we can get into a routine here. Crystal has been moving from the house they werre renting with Steven so it's been crazy. I want to tell all of you that don't have health insurance to find something, as it makes a huge difference in the way you are treated. Almost like being worthy, or not worthy. It's really sad people. So please find whatever you can and GET IT!!! It really makes a difference in how you're treated.
Don't forget about the "Bash for the Crash, June 28th.. we will be selling Chicken, donated by Pilgrams Pride, Hot Dogs, Sausage Sticks, Refreshements, Live Band, Trail Riding, and 50 Track. Camping is encouraged....
$10.00 admission Fee, and I am going to make Breakfast Burrito's for the morning after. 830 Neck Rd, Palmer, 75152. 20 minutes south of Dallas of 45.
Again, Thank You so much Every one. We love you all and Pray for you everyday.

Hello Everyone,
Just a quick update on Thomas. He is going to Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy 4 times a week. He is working with the Therapist who rehabed his knee and his wrists. He desperately is wanting to walk, and will ask us to help phim stand, which he is doing once we help him get up, although it is only for about 5 minutes at the most. He is working on stretching his tendants, ligaments, and the tone in his muscles from being down for so long. He has a long process ahead of him, and gets very frustrated at times because he alot of things for himself yet, without assistance.
To all of you that came to Bash for the Crash, thank you so much, as it was a success. Your support and friendship will never be forgotten. I know that Thomas enjoyed seeing many of you, he stayed out there from 11am until a little after midnight. Very long day for him. To those of you that didn't come, sorry you missed the fun...
Please keep Thomas in your prayers, as I keep all of you in mine. Again everyone that has helped us, your support has been greatly appreciated and the money raised is going toward Therapy, and tools in the home to help Thomas get on his feet quicker, such as bars to grasp to help get up, Shower accessories, and doctors appointments, neuro and eye specialist, as we are still waiting on Medicaid.......
Thank You everyone for everything, from the bottom of my heart, I love you all...

Hello Everyone,
We are sorry that we haven't kept up dates on Thomas, but we honestly stay very busy 24/7 with him, and everday life. I will tell you that he has been working hard. We go to Physical Therapy 3x a week, and at home we work on homework, writing, reading, stretches, exercises, plus anything else you can think of, we are doing. Not to mention the doctors appointments. Thomas is still working on walking, he does well in the parrallel bars with assistance, although his balance still isn't stable and he tires fast. However, his legs are getting muscular and strong again as is the rest of his body. He still doesn't have full use of his right arm, we are working on it though, and the right side of his body is weaker, but continues to get stronger. The vision in his right eye has improved in a month's time, as he can see better out of it. We have a long way to go though. He get's confused as far as his Long and Short Term Memory. He recalls more Long Term memories, which sometimes get mixed up in the days activities. However, we have seen an improvement with his short term daily memory recalls. Thomas' recovery is going to take some time, but make no doubt about it he is going to do it....
I am asking that you all keep him in your prayers, as that is what has gotten us this far. I also am asking for you to send cards, letters, photo's, jokes, or anything. He needs to stay in touch with the MX Community, and to hear from his friends. I can't tell you how he lights up when he receives mail, or a phone call from someone. It's as though it brings him a step closer back to us. I really need your help with this. Those of you that have his cell number, please call once in awhile, as he is perfectly capable of carrying on a conversation with you. He needs you more than ever now for his recovery. I will put our address on the bottom of this. I also have an open door policy here in Palmer. I know it's a drive out here, but anyone is welcome to camp out or stay in the spare bedroom, or just come on out for a BBQ.
We love you all, and I am so very grateful to all of you for all of the continued support for my son. You are our family and I pray for all of you daily, and the blessing of you in our lives.
Thank you again Everyone, and God Bless all of you.
Love,

Hi Mike,
First off sorry your going through some tough times....hope you heal up man.
Thanks for inquiring about Thomas........ It has now been a little over a year since Thomas's crash and head injury. I spoke with him and his mother a couple of weeks ago....on the 1 yr mark. Thomas still has a long way to go, but has definitely made some progress. At the 1 yr mark, he can use the parallel / traction bars to support himself and take steps with some assistance....still has a ways to go before he walks on his own, but the small steps in within the bars sure have given him and his family some smiles. Thomas still goes to therapy 4-5 times a week in Dallas. He is getting his short-term memory back on his day to day activities, and can talk a little on the phone now...with a decent understanding of what you and him are talking about.
He still has a long way to go, but after a year later he has come a long way. Hopefully he will be walking on his own before too long.
Mike - if you would man...send him a card his address is below. He looks for cards and phone calls now more than EVER, SINCE HE IS STARTING TO PIECE things together, and is wgoing through the daily tough grind of rehab, and not being able to run with his friends and do the normal things....he is starting to realize the severity of what has happened to him.
Anybody else reading this.....feel free to drop him a card in the mail....only a couple of bucks out of your pocket, but means the world to Thomas and his family !!!!!!!!!

Schuler 977...Update
First, I want to thank Mike for checking in on Thomas, and I hope Mike is doing well. I wanted to let you know Thomas is done with Pate Re-Hab, Friday the 8th of May was his last day there. He will be starting Physical and Occupational Therapy this Friday the 15th at UTSW in Dallas. We are very excited about this as they are state of the art Technology, and stay on top of all the new gadgets. We were going there before Pate, and we really liked it. Pate was great for Cognitive, and Functional Therapies, but we weren't happy with the Physical Therapy, as we felt 30 minutes a day wasn't enough. Anyway, another new door opening, and we are ready to leap into it. God has his plan, and we are building upon it.
Next Thursday the 21st, Thomas will have surgery on his right eye. He has had double vision since he has opened his eyes at JPS Hospital. Over a year now. They are going to move and re-attatch a few of the muscles that will pull his right eye inward and stay in sync with his left. He is very excited to have it done, I can only imagine. It gives me a headache just to try and cross my eyes for a minute or so...
We are currently working on him using a Walker, which is difficult as he sees 2 floors, 2 walkers, etc...so he has the sensation that he is falling or will fall. He has the parrallel bars down, and works on balance in them, and bending over. He is also working on making transfers from the wheel chair to the recliner. He totally does all of his own hygiene, gets himself in and out of bed with minimal assistance, can prepare meals, vehicle transfers, and so much more. He is incredible, as he never complains, except when really working his right arm, as it is very painful, none the less he works through it.
Memory is better. He needs to work much more on the short term, but there are many positive signs, and he will do it.
I have been working full time, and Crystal (God Bless Her) has been caring for Thomas during the day. Steve calls her "Sarge". I admire her so much, and her love and devotion to my son. True Love People!!!!
I also want to thank Sam at TMX, and the riders that ride the 50 track there, as their rides donate money towards Thomas. Now that the holidays are over, I am going to cut back some on my work schedule, and focus on a Foundation for Tramatic Brain Injuries to help other riders or persons and families, and there are not many resources for this here in Texas, and what there is, is very limited.
It's time to start "Paying it Forward" a little. Thomas is our main focus, and everything else will fall into place.
Thank you again to everyone for all of your support. Your Love, Prayers, and Friendship have kept us strong.
God Bless each and everyone of you, and we look forward to coming to see you at the tracks this summer.
Thank You, Thank You!!!!
Love Always,
T-Mom

I know many of you supported, prayed... and continue to ask about Thomas Schuler.
Well, yesterday March 2 2011 -- nearly 3 years (April 200eight) after his traumatic brain injury accident, Thomas finally took his first steps on a Treadmill.
Check out his first walk on a treadmill since he got hurt.
