As noted on the website:
* Some Yamaha models come with a plastic fork guard guide ring that will not allow for Shock Sox installation. We recommend removing the ring to ensure the best fork seal protection, before installing your Shock Sox.
This is on my 03' and I know the forks changed in 04', but the application should be pretty similar. The stock bolt is an M6 x 20. The Shock Sox of course increase the diameter of the area the ring must fit over, so I tried various sizes and found that the perfect fit resulted from the use of an M6 x 30. I purchased 4 of them for 89 cents at Home Depot, so it was both a quick and inexpensive solution for these guide rings.

Every bike ive ever had that used those guides I have taken off. They serve no real purpose, and if one of them gets twisted it will break the fork guard.
Plus you will have to take them off to clean your shock sox, and the last thing is, they will cut the shock sox.... toss them

So it's ok to keep the guards on there without the guide rings?

Well its not a big bike, but I take them off our 85's. After a while they also wear down

Hey guys thanks for the input and helping Ascend75 out.
Also, Ascend75 ...thanks for doing the bolt research, that's good to know just in case someone ever asks about the bolt and is adamant about leaving the whole system in tact. And one other thing.... Remove them after your done riding for the day, and before you wash your bike. Hand wash them with warm/soapy water and let dry, and install before your next ride.
THANKS for relying on Shock Sox to protect your fork seals. We appreciate your business!!

No problem. Bates had some competing brand on display as well but they didn't look nearly as well engineered as the shock sox. Mike from Pro Privateer just put new seals in these forks a few weeks ago so I definitely wanted to protect them. Everything I've read seems to indicate that you need to remove and clean around these type of protectors after each ride but I don't even see how you could do that with the other brands, so the idea behind the shock sox coming off so easily is pretty cool.

BINGO!!! They are Hassle-Free and work very well. It takes no time at all to install them, remove them, and clean them. Even if you just want to remove them during riding to check things out...it only takes seconds, and gives you a sense of mental insurance - hahaha !!!
A little personal testimonial.... I have ran them since 2005, joined the company in 2006, bought the company from Kevin Weable in 2007, and have not had a blown fork seal since. I would not have got so heavily involved, and/or bought the company if I didn't believe 100% in the product. I have yet to have a sponsored racer, or customer....weather it's outdoor MX, Supercross, BAJA 1000, Cross Country, Arenacross, or general weekend-warrior rider call me with a blown fork seal after properly running Shock Sox on their bike.
When I said "THANKS" and "We appreciate your business" in my post above.... I truly meant it !!!!! It's guys like you going into the shops and picking them up, that are taking this little ole Dallas based product.....to the national level.
Thanks again Ascend75 (and everyone else that has helped support SS through the years) !!
