First off look for a good used PW ride the crap out of it and get used to the scene. Go out to village Creek and pracice on the youth track it's perfect for learning and safe.
Get All the saftey gear possible, but at the least get a helmet, boots and gloves.
Keep it fun and remember this is what (your Rider) wants and let them have fun with it. Keep the whole thing in check and remeber if Mamma not happy no bodys happy.
Come on out and don't be afraid to ask the questions you have to just about anyone, you'll find most are more then happy to help.
Enjoy!

buy him an XR 50 and dont let him race 50s, thats my opinion and how I would do it if I could do it over again. 50 racing is a bottomless pit that you throw money into

Could not agree more, but we did it,and like you said "if I had it to do over again". I wish someone would of given me that advise 14 years ago. I dont regret any moment of it for the memories, but if I could of saved that money for something else, just thinking about it makes me sick $100 this $100 that, and countless hrs of maintenance. OH I could go on and on,XR50 or PW or TTR50,just let them learn and have fun, wait till he's old or big enough to ride 65's,then think about which direction HE wants to go.

I wouldn't trade the time that my kids have spent on 50s for anything. I don't disagree that keeping a 50 race bike in race condition takes a fair amount of money and effort, but in my opinion its worth it.

Start with a Yamaha PW50 - it is the smallest bike and the easiest for a 4 year old to ride (my youngest learned to ride one with training wheels at 3.5 and was riding without training wheels a few months after he turned 4). You can buy a brand new one for $1300, or you can find a good one used for $600+.

Step 1 - Find a field for him to ride in and let him do a bunch of circles in the grass for the first few times on the bike (we set up some cones).
Step 2 - Once he can ride in a field, find a track where they have a "pit track" that is seperate from the big track. Let him ride there until he can comfortably get over the jumps and through the corners.
Step 3 - find a big track with organized practice where he will be seperated from the bigger bikes and let him try to learn to ride on a big track
Step 4 (optional) - go race!

DON'T waste money on a professional MX trainer until your kid reaches the point that he can get around the track really well on his own. Most of what you will work with him on for the first couple of months are basics like - keep your feet on the pegs, look where you're going, stay out of the deep ruts and the mud, and learning how to ride without crashing . Once he figures all of that out you will be neck deep into becoming a "moto-dad"
